Do you guys have titles that get no respect at all? By that, I mean that you love them, but when people are over, it gets completely ignored? My Nba Jam(s), Killer Instinct, and super nice looking mame cab running Pacman (and a couple of other classics) get no game time AT ALL. The kids all gravite toward the Super Chase racing game, the big showcase cabinet with the naomi system playing Virtua Tennis (or virtual fighter 4), or play for HOURS against each other on the neogeo (Puzzle Bubble is the most plyed game by far); and they love the crap out of Mortal Kombat. Girls are REALLY into Mortal Kombat (and endless sonya vs sonya rounds)

I think KI is too intimidating for new gamers; the gameplay isnt really spectacular when you can't pull off combos; and Nba JAM(s) seems to be incredibly confusing to visitors. Its like they dont know what to do once their player goes off screen. I tell them to simply point toward where the action is but they all get confused and they stop playing after a quarter.

Pacman gets one or two plays, out of nostalgia.

It's interesting to see what attracts players in 2012..

It is funny you post this now. I just moved all my games to Arkansas, just set them up and my neighbors came over to see them. The games I have are Dragons lair, Space Ace, Joust, Tron, Environmental Disc of Tron, Star Wars with ESB on it, Extreme Hunting, Tutankham, PunchOut, 1978 Playboy and a Firepower Pinball. And the game that had people around it all night? was my crappy MAME cabinet. I was shocked.

I really think some people just don't appreciate the cabinets, I don't like Mame cabinets because you loose part of the experience when you walk up to an Asteroids Deluxe, or a Missile Command, Berzerk etc. The cabinet and artwork are apart of that experience!

Zaxxon! People that haven't seen it in years first walk in and go "Cool Zaxxon!" but don't play it. Collectors don't really seem too hot on it, either.

It has to be one of the most recognizable games that hardly anyone wants to play.

Fire One! by Exidy is a game I've developed a taste for through MAME, it's pretty rare now though because it was a commercial failure, personally I think it's 100 times better a sub game than Sea Wolf which was a big hit.

Others:

Super Zaxxon (speaking of Zaxxon!) - LOVE the faster pace!
Frenzy -much better than Berzerk IMHO and has a lot more to it.
Victory - Like Defender-meets-Asteroids with a spinner!
Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory - A lot of fun once you get the hang of gameplay.
Rescue Raider - Like Chicken Shift and Snake Pit, why are the best Sente games always the rarest?

Mappy just sits there. Occasionally someone plays one game, then comes over to me in tears and say "the game looks so cute... but it's evil... it's EVIL!" Most people aren't up to the challenge :p

it's been a while since i've done a party but during the last few Venture got almost no play. and Tempest was surprisingly slow as well.

the games that got all the attention though were pretty much anything on the Neo Geo multi, CarnEvil, Golden Axe, and Ms. Pac.

I think any game that has an immediate, simple, clear objective gets a better chance at repeated gameplay than games that might be a bit more involved or take multiple tries to "get it."

It's why (imo) games like Centipede, Pole Position, PacMan get more plays & ones like Rolling Thunder, Xevious, Elevator Action sit less-played when people are over.

Soooo... my overall vote goes to Rolling Thunder. Fun game, but more involved than the casual glancer is typically willing to stand around for.

I'm with you buddy. The name Zaxxon is famous but almost no one wants one...in fact I think I coulda got a working one for $150 if I'd really tried(this is a bad few months for me to get new arcade stuff)

Funny how Zaxxon always comes up on these kinds of threads. LOL I have a Zaxxon and find the same thing, everyone's oh look Zaxxon! They might play 1 game then they lose interest and off they go. LOL
I personally love my Zaxxon, but will admit i don't play it much. LOL

Here was my post from a get together we had around Easter. Crystal Castles was the big loser then... and it usually is when people are over.

Had the family over for Easter, as it was our year to host. As usual, I turn all the games on and let the kids down there to have a blast. I thought it would be interesting to keep track of plays this time. The number of people who played was 15 and that included ages 6-64. The count was done by hand and by me loading credits, rounded to the nearest 5. Here's the list of my games in order of plays:

- 60 in 1 cabaret: 40
- Sorcerer pin: 30
- Ikari Warriors: 25
- Karate Champ: 25
- Playchoice 10: 15
- MultiWilliams: 15
- Crystal Castles: 10

Surprisingly, Karate Champ was not at the bottom. This was due to my 16 year old nephew taking a real interest in the game after learning to flip over the opponent. :)

The PC-10 is usually near the top of the list, but my brother made it a point to finish SMB3. He did it, but that took up a lot of time on the machine.

I was a bit surprised with my MultiWilliams. The kids usually love to continously play Bubbles, but it sat idle for the most part.

No surprise- Crystal Castles. It's always near the bottom at our functions. My grail is sorely misunderstood. :(

No surprise- 60 in 1. It always gets the most plays.

No surprise- Sorcerer pin. This pin is new for me and most of my family hasn't seen it before. It also attracted my mom and aunt to play, which never happens!

I think I am one of the rare few that like that game and play it every time I come across one.

Hide The Salami doesn't get much respect in my house.

*cries*

Of all my machines, Galaxian and Donkey Kong JR get the leave love......
Galaxian is one of my all time favorites, def under rated IMO....

Defender or Stargate is one of those games that people say they love, but never play because it usually kicks the casual gamers ass within 3 minutes.

However the hardcore gamers can't get enough of it.

I used to have a DJ Boy PCB (It came with a small lot of games). It probably gets no respect because its a real shitpiece of a game. :)

My die hard arcade gets the least amount of attention out of the 4 games I have. The neo geo seems to get the most.
