Games That Get Hard Too Fast

Probably because it's hard from the get-go. It's what makes it so great for a home environment.

I think Craig brings up a good point here.

I'll actually put Asteroids Deluxe v1 ROMs in this category, as I'd be pissed if I shelled out a quarter in an arcade to get punished by a game that's just so unfairly brutal.

But in a home environment AD v1 is seriously one of my favorites, and nothing gets my adrenaline pumping (and forearms hurting) like a good game of AD v1. It's deliciously unfair, on the same level as Baby Pac, IMO. (And it's also something you actually CAN get better at, with practice.)

We almost should have a separate thread for games that fall into this category, as IMO there are games that just have a steep (but climbable) learning curve (e.g., Gravitar), and then there are ones that get impossible (Sinistar).

Yep.

Every single easy game I have eventually gotten rid of because they become boring. Hard games never do.

Not Missile Command. Granted it's difficult for the uncoordinated people, but once you learn, you can play it endlessly. Super Missile Attack on the other hand . . . so hard, even for good Missile Command players.

That's the thing, I was in the arcades when AD wa released. I'm not sure I would last a minute. And my parents usually would only give me like $2.00. So fuck that game.

On the other hand, despite missile command always punching me in the balls, I kind of want to own one.

Oh and the other sequel I never liked was millipede. It was like centipede, only shittier!

Hide the pickle is one that gets too hard too fast.
Any game on Viagra.

Beat 'em & Eat 'em (Atari 2600)
Burning Desire (Atari 2600)
Custer's Revenge (Atari 2600)
Gigolo (Atari 2600)

Bubble Bath Babes (NES)

Strip Fighter 2 (Turbo Grafix 16)

Cho Aniki (Playstation)

Boong-Ga Boonga (arcade)
Miss World '96 Nude (arcade)

I'll toss out my favorite, Marble Madness. The 2nd level ratchets it up hard (steelies, marble munchers, and that dang ice pit), then the 3rd level just with the acid puddles and that dang wave, then the 4th level that literally throws your marble off a cliff, vacuums, and those damn hammers. I hate those hammers at the end of 4.

Then 'Everything you know is wrong' is confusing. And the last level where you have those disappearing floors... Sheesh.

I agree marble madness goes from fun to holy crap real fast.

Did anyone mention Congo Bongo? It's either the game is hard or I am terrible at it. In contrast, I actually find Zaxxon to pretty reasonable to get going for a 5 minute game.

How do you know what version you have in AD?

I mean I guess it depends on whether you're good at a particular game but for me within my own collection I would have to say Red Baron gets harder really quick. Don't get me wrong I gotten good at it but it goes from 0 to pissed off super fast.

Total Carnage. I love the game but you're done after about 5 mins. And the insane thing is the game is freaking long. You're going to be playing it at least a hour to get to the end.

Sure you could do unlimited continues, but that's no fun

Has no one mentioned Bagman? Oh wait, that just starts off as brutally hard.
