Games known for commanding stupid money, that you don't give a sh*t about

Paperboy - dear god, I just don't get it. That gameplay blows goats.
Dragon's Lair - be serious. Play action doesn't enter into it.

Discs of Tron fucking rocks! Yes the cost is insane and I'll never have one, but the gameplay is so goddamn fun. Tough game but once you put some time in and get some skills it really kicks in. EDoT is just the icing on the cake. Wish emulation wasn't out of the question so I could build a fake someday.

Tron is my favorite game of all time. I still remember seeing it for the first time in the lobby of the movie theater right after seeing the movie. I was 10. There was a dozen kids standing around that game. My dad put me on his shoulders so I could see. Later when I saw the game at my arcade for the first time I used all my quarters on it. A fun way to enjoy to game is to challenge yourself to beating some of the higher levels. Recognizer level anyone? There is a pac-man-esque trick on that level. Later lightcycle levels are awesome too... I like getting the "bit" on the spiders level and waving goodbye to people as I go up the MCP beam.

I find Journey fun as well.

Maybe I'm just easy to please. : )

Nostalgia and emotion definitely influence what we love.

from a collection standpoint, what surprises me is that a very poorly constructed object can be considered art.
For example, really inspect a Nintendo cabinet sometime, low end garbage wood and not very clever construction.
Look at the art on the side of a rockola cab, not very original bit of art, more like a sign at a car parts store. and it is cheap particle board, the sides aren't even a full 3/4inch.
how in the hell is that art, just a moment of pop-culture money shoveling.

not many video games got the full effect of a 60s-70s pinball backglass or playfield. now that is art.

and from a gameplay perspective.
what it comes down to is how much time was spent balancing the game. was it just animated and put out and is pure crap....think of hunchback.
does the game have brilliant enemy dynamics that create a sense of AI randomness?
and some people just like a simple game with a repetitive pattern.

that's where it comes down to personal preference. some people like repetitive patterns for relaxation. others like a frontal cortex onslaught. kinda defines how your brain is wired?

I strongly believe Tron only commands a lot because it's multi-generational in its appeal as a theme and because a restore costs so damned much money. Art kit alone is $600.

the only reason i want a Tron (not badly enough to pay market value, mind you) is because it looks cool as hell.

other than that, IMO it's a dud of a game ... the gameplay sucks hahahahaha

The 60-1's that keep showing up on my CL for $1,500.

Couldn't agree more.

Everyone had different experiences growing up, some titles mean more to them than others - just like music. Certain games make me remember certain times, locations, friends and the fun things we did growing up.

It would make a really boring hobby if everyone liked the exact same games.

Exactly!

careful man.. I think thats two mentions recently.

Like Beetlejuice after saying his name 3 times he will appear and start blathering on and on about how much a Wreck it Ralph is worth.

Speaking of which, I was on reddit and noticed he has a pinball channel now?

Tron is horrible
Zoo Keeper is dumb
Food Fight I don't get
Dragon's Lair is impossible and not fun
Star Wars awful
Quantum you draw circles why the hell do people pay for this game

Mostly Grail games on my list. I'm sure there's more. Guess that's cause I grew up playing 90's games

Tron and Star Wars are the first two that pop into my head. I don't care for Donkey Kong either but I don't know how much it goes for since I never look at them and I didn't even like it as a kid. But I absolutely loved Star Wars when I was a kid (my local arcade had a cockpit), but the gameplay (or mainly the replay value) just isn't there as an adult. I also liked Discs of Tron as a kid (it's still OK to play a game or two when I see one, just like Star Wars, but I wouldn't own one or play it repetitively) and the regular Tron is just awful, lol. Cool looking cab but gameplay, fun factor, and replayability is a major criteria when I choose to own a arcade game since they take up so much space it doesn't make sense to own a game that you're not going to enjoy playing a lot.

And I don't know how anyone couldn't like Tapper. Tapper has great gameplay and replayability to be a great game to own that would basically never get old kinda like Centipede where the gameplay is fun and you always have the replayability of trying to chase down your personal best high scores. Tapper also has a great cab and theming so I can almost understand why this game costs a lot since it's a well rounded cab/game. I'd love to have one, but just not willing to pay the price, heh.

I guess I could throw Dragons Lair on my list.... I wouldn't want one for free, lol.

Oh shit, totally forgot about Tempest! Or actually, is that even a high priced game? I don't know since I never look at them since I hate the gameplay I would never even think of owning one, lol.

Major Havoc
EDOT
Quantum
Kozmik Kroozr
<Insert game that costs a lot that I never played as a kid>

That's really the only reason I think I can't get into a lot of these is because I just never played them growing up for whatever reason. Star Wars and Robotron are still on my must have list and one day I will have money put aside to pay the crazy price it will cost me. But I played the crap out of those when I was a kid and loved them.

I also played the crap out of Dragon's Lair and love it even though most people don't. But, I mastered it, and you can talk about it's lack of real game play all you want but back in the 80's when they used to put a TV on top of the game so the crowd that formed could see you playing...when everyone watched until you rescued the princess, it was pretty cool to me back then. I was never good enough to draw a crowd on any other game. And I am convinced that once I get mine restored, I won't ever be able to master it again. :)

And Tron...I did play that a lot...but I didn't love it. I would add that if I could, but the price is so high and I would rather get Star Wars or Robotron first.

totally. it plays really well on raspberry pi daphne.
back in the arcade i quickly got through it like most everyone at the time.
Now I can't keep the patterns in my head.
I even tried the cheat to reach the dragon and tried over and over again but can't figure out the end. run from the dragon a couple few times then dead.....

Dragons Lair and Space Ace for me. I keep trying to like it, but I just can't. Especially since there is one local that's a firm price of $10,000

As far as post necro, I'm new to the forums and really appreciate these threads popping up. They're new to me, and even when I go back and look at older similar ones it's interesting to see how people's tastes have changed.

And, honestly, for a hobby that's stuck in time, how many brand new original discussion threads can there possibly be? No sense allowing only those "brand new thought" threads as the forum will die a slow death. It's a public forum. Let it be whatever it wants.

Was at an auction once where I saw a guy jumping for joy when he paid $400 for a beat up Rastan. I paid $50 for mine and that was high.
