Games just for collecting purposes

I really want to avoid getting caught in the collecting trap with arcade games. I have way to many console games that that I never play, but own just for collecting sake. I can't bring myself to let go of them too. I want my games to be just ones that I will play.

That is the exact reason why I have a bunch of ST-V games that I have never played (well, tested them to made sure they worked, but that is it). I am a Sega finatic, so owning a bunch of ST-V carts is very awesome for my collection

I don't have the space to keep games I don't play. I used to just buy cheap JAMMA boards, just for variety, but am now trying to only keep the 8 or so that I'll actually play on a semi-regular basis (hence why Double Dragon got dropped in the mail yesterday... it never got played).

I used to collect games based on the rarity factor (Blaster Duramold, Cosmic Chasm, etc), but I found that the obscure games never got played by anyone, including myself, and collectors who would appreciate the games never stopped by often enough to warrant keeping them. As space became a premium, they tended to be the first to go.

So lately I've been gravitating towards collecting games that I not only find fun, but have some casual appeal as well. For example, my next restoration will be a Centipede; fairly common in collecting circles, but extremely recognizable to the casual player, and if the restoration is done well, still becomes a nice showroom piece.

The only one I have now that gets no play and would be considered a collector's game is my Space Wars. It was one of the first arcade games that I ever played, and certainly the first player vs. player game I ever played. That was my motivation for getting one, but without a second person to play against, the game has become more a display item than a play item. I may end up selling it just to reclaim that half of the game room that it currently takes up.

Who holds the official list of what games suck and are therefore "uncollectable"? Gray area!

I've thought about getting a cheap Fighter's History - I think it's fairly safe that's a game that sucks. (Only reason I want it is to trade the board out for the game it was obviously trying to rip off - Street Fighter II.)

So basically what Phet is trying to say is he has no friends, his life sucks and he wants to shoot himself in the face. Cheer up, if im ever in your area I will stop by and challenge you to a game.

For me its professor pac. Its fun the first dozen times but then you memorize all the questions and its boring.

Don't you dare!

Space Wars is my "oldest game" and I will sell it last. Space Invaders, on the other hand... Fits this thread description... And Phet was begging me to keep it.

I modified my house to get Space Wars into my arcade!!!

Funny how tastes vary, I feel the exact opposite, if I had a Space Wars it would feel "meh" to me....

Now the Space Invaders will not be leaving my collection.:D

And to think I just missed out on buying the SI you so detest........:p

I did get an SI not too long after, I thought you sold yours?

Nah, it and an Asteroids cocktail and a minty Star Wars cabinet* have taken over my living room...

* Perfect for making a chair!
