Gameroom Project - Part 2

Uh oh! What happened? :(

If it makes you feel any better, it took us 4 years to do our basement. And then it flooded. Twice.

:)

Chris

Being charged for work that is not being done.

I am currently not happy about my project and probably will only be mildly happy when it is done knowing what will be wrong and uncomplete about it.

I hope mine floods in the 1st year. This way I can take the money and put it back in the back and leave the basement as it was.

Yeah, right now I really dont give a sh*t anymore.

Man that sucks. When I was getting estimates for my basement to be finished, I came across a bunch of contractors that told me they couldn't do certain things and even though I expressed things being done a certain way, they told me that is how they were going to do it. I eventually found some friends of friends and finished my basement in steps(getting someone to frame, someone to hang drywall, someone to do electrical, etc..). Probably saved about 30K that way and things got done how I wanted them done.

Brian
If you want some #'s for the guys I used, let me know, I am local to you.

its ok michael. Ahh the joys of home ownership and home improvement. How far backwards is the contractor with you? If its only a grand or less, ditching him and getting another contractor or doing the work yourself might be the best option. If your like 5 grand backwards, that sucks man and you could prob go to court over it if need be.

If i didnt live to far away now, i would literally help you get it done for beer and game plays later on.. sucks man. Ive been there with gcs before. Thats why i do damn near everything i can myself. Hang in there michael. There will be a day when the headaches and effort pay off.

If you do decide to ditch thew contractor, do not tell them this. You can sweet talk, sucker them if need be, do whatever you can to get as much additional work out of them as possible, then tell them to fuck off.

I don't know about your area but where I live, if you have a contractor working in your house and you don't pay him what is owed, he can file a 'mechanic's lien' against your house for the amount.
If I remember correctly that means that when you sell your house, he gets paid first from the money before you do.
Just don't piss off any contractors too much would be my advice.

Buy a book from Home Depot and do it yourself, none of this is rocket science.

That truly does suck. The GC and crew that did mine were FANTASTIC, and I've recommended them for many other jobs since then and each person has been tickled to death with their work.

The GC I use lives very close to you, and he's a very honest person with strong moral fiber. Let me know if you want his name and #. And you're welcome to come over and see the quality of work they did on mine.

Inspections are today, so I wouldnt even think of switching people. The quality of their work is A+. Just my vision and his vision are not quite on the same page. It will look great when done to anyone looking at it or buying the house. But I am just saying I know what could have been so I will be disappointed. They only have a few more weeks till they are done. Then I will need to get the flooring done. Which reminds me I need to look for new carpet since I will probably nix the Blacklight carpet I chose.

Yeah I am not sure I get this. You are contracting and paying someone to realize YOUR vision. If he can't comply, kick him to the curb. It seems like you weren't sure about doing this from the get-go. A finished basement would be far superior to a flooded, gutted mess. What's gotten into you man?

Ah, well that's a shame. Especially the part about his vision not being on the same page as yours. Your GC should have been fully on board with the same vision as yours from day one. Sounds like they're good at execution, not so much on planning/design and working to ensure you the customer are happy with their work because it resulted in exactly what you wanted.

Best of luck to you.

Well my project passed 3 inspections today:

Framing
Electrical
HVAC

On a side note: I HATE HOME DEPOT!

EDIT: Wife said this: "Games WILL go down there. That was the whole reason we did this project."

Ahahaha, calm down and put down the rum. Time to right this pirate ship, Cap'n.

Ok I watched Cool Hand Luke and "Got my mind right".

Enjoy the updated pics. A couple of KLOV'ers have already stopped by to see Skydive Games before it has opened. I took their quarters anyways. :D

Update:

1) Drywall has started to be hung. (Or is it hanged?)
2) Carpet will be ordered tomorrow.
3) Wood laminate flooring will be ordered tomorrow.

I am dying to see how the wood subfloor is going to look. I have not seen any installs in person. Hoping the floor will work ok with the carpet.

Drywall is done! They now will start to paint on Monday.

Still need ideas on colors. The wife and I have default colors picked out, but still looking for cool ideas. I have another post started about that, so take a look and let me know. :)

Here is the post: Gameroom Colors

Damn flooring is expensive. Just ordered the floor for the wife's craftroom, costs double per sqft as my "Special Neon" carpet.

I should have just used carpet through out. :D

Paint is on the walls! :D
