game sounds that just never sounded right to you?

In the 1 player version (not Vs.) of Karate Champ, the teacher sounds like a deeply stoned Grover from Sesame Street.

"Bee-Ginnnn..."

Ugh, Bosconian is pretty bad. "A LARK! A LARK!" "RATTLE NATIONS." "CLOCKED HALL!" :D

Berzerk is actually pretty clear, but I could have sworn for the longest time they were saying "GOD DAMN HUMANOID, GOD DAMN INTRUDER!"

Great thread....

Street Fighter Ryu or whatever his name was always sounded like he ways yelling "I'm pukin!" WTH is a hoy duken, nevermind! I hate fighters anyways.

Pole Position voices were crappy but you couldn't hear what she was saying even after you qualified.... it was 'blah blahb ahabm rurffmshefmmf along side the road"

Gorf.... always thought he was saying "Loch Ness mess". not sure what Nessie has to do with Space Battles.

Phoenix had great sounds but during gameplay it would never fail that the sound effects would get all tweaked out and almost warped sounding when several moving sprites were on screen at once.

Every time I ever played PP in the wild, the woman saying "Prepare To Qualify" always sounded to me like she was in a casket 2 buildings away from the game cabinet. In the MAME version it's a 'little' clearer, but it still sounds like it was recorded with one of the worst mics ever produced.

I also remember in Sega's 'Altered Beast' Genesis console game, the part that says "Rise From Your Grave" sounded awful as well. We used to say that it was Elmer Fudd because it sounded like it was saying "WISE fwom yuh GWAVE..." LOL

What sounds do you remember from your gaming days (you know, the FIRST run of those days) that always sounded like they were a little 'off' in a game?

+1000000 "prprrrrrrrr uu qualifiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii"

Ok, I can't exactly say this is more of an SFX related sound, but its certainly in a very commonly known game from Sega.

Daytona USA

All I know is the song used throughout the attract loop and game is pretty addicting, but a little garbled itself. Known as "Let's Go Away....." and is typically the theme in which everyone remembers this game by. The problem is that the way the actual vocalist sings this song is somewhat eerry in that instead of just plainly saying in english "Daytonaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" it sounds more like "Daytonnnggggggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

And on top of that, in the game's test menu/sound test/BGM 1 is actually a song named "Bitching"

......

I say just about every sound effect on Phoenix sounds out of place.

I remember walking into an arcade when mortal combat came out and all I would ever hear is Liu Kang going "waaaaaaaaaaa" over and over again or whatever that mess was the he said when he bicycle kicked in mk3? lmfao

The voice of the big stone head at the beginning of Victory Road sounds out of place -- almost sounds like a frat boy or something. I think the voice should have been an octave or two lower.

I mean, c'mon. It's a freaking stone head!

The announcer in Track & Field says: "On your MARCH... get set..."

The first few times I played Arch Rivals I thought the "DE-FENSE DE-FENSE!!!" chant was actually... "HE DID IT!!! HE DID IT!!!!"

Kyle

There's a bunch:

Bosconian (one of my faves): "uh-light, uh-light", "condition wed", etc

Hyper Sports seems to really struggle with the longer times/larger scores on the events

Street Fighter as mentioned is a good one

Super Basketball: "Sa-Dunk shot"....Dunk shot is awesome by the way.

Gottlieb had the right idea with Q*bert. If you can't replicate the English language with the hardware to a satisfactory degree, create a new language.

I thought of another one -- there's this weird grunting/moaning noise in the game Cabal that never made sense to me.

And then at the end of the section it does this silly "plinkidy plink" music while you do a happy dance forward. Also odd.

"MIGHTY BLOW! MIGHTY BLOW!" (I'm still disappointed that this is "Body blow!" instead.)

"AH TOOL KIT!" (Where? What tool kit, SFII?) or "AH YOU CAN!" (I can...what?)

"HASTA LA BYE BYE!" (One of the funniest things ever said by a dying level boss.)

"DHSA DUT!" (I think this is the ref talking in Taito's "Ring Fighter")

---

One thing I've never jived with is any game - besides one with a theme like Gal's Panic - that uses the sound of a woman having a "pleasure moment" when you get a power up or an achievement. It either makes me think, "Some super nerdy developers came up with that, because they were lonely" or "Some marketing people think that's the most action anyone playing this game will ever get". :D

(Along those same lines, what's with the dude who has a moment of his own when you pick up an item in Gauntlet on the Nintendo version?)

64th Street: A Detective Story has some gawd-awful sfx and voice with echo. Way over modulated. And nobody ever wants to be player 2 b/c they don't want to be a hero w/ a purple vest, bright blue pants and a cap!

Stupid throwing sound --- Dehrrrrr! Dehrrrrr! Dehrrrrr! Dehrrrrr!

The one line on Gorf I can't understand goes something like:

"I am the Gorfian contesness." At least that's what it sounds like to me. The last word isn't even a word. I can never understand that one.

"I am the Gorfian consciousness."
