Every time I ever played PP in the wild, the woman saying "Prepare To Qualify" always sounded to me like she was in a casket 2 buildings away from the game cabinet. In the MAME version it's a 'little' clearer, but it still sounds like it was recorded with one of the worst mics ever produced.

I also remember in Sega's 'Altered Beast' Genesis console game, the part that says "Rise From Your Grave" sounded awful as well. We used to say that it was Elmer Fudd because it sounded like it was saying "WISE fwom yuh GWAVE..." LOL

What sounds do you remember from your gaming days (you know, the FIRST run of those days) that always sounded like they were a little 'off' in a game?

Yeah, the PP woman sounds like she has a mouthful of cotton.

Gorf, of all games. One of the lines the he says I THINK is "All hail are supreme, Gorfian Empire" or something like that. To this day I really don't know what that single line is.

To me it sounds like he says "All hail castle cream, Gorfian Empire" lol

Its just "off" if you ask me.....

Not to mention the "HA HA HA", which sounds like "TA TA TA".

Also, my GORF seems to have a high frequency whistle to the speech, I hear it on mine, and on another I worked on, but not on my friend's GORF. But, then again, when I'm at home it'll be the only game on/only sound, but at his house he'll have all the games on. Probably just not hearing it in that environment.

Also, while "Prepare to Qualify" sounds at least intelligible, the "Good Driving, you have qualified to race" is really hard to understand - I had to hear it many times before I figured out what she was saying.

The original Street Fighter says something, but it has always sounded like the adults talking on a Peanuts cartoon...

I think part of what it says is something about 'fighters from around the world'.

I was going to say this. The original Street Fighter when you win a match says, I think, "Great fighting, but remember there are guys like you all over the world." It is so muffled you can hardly understand it.

Yeah, I remember this.. terribly muffled...
when you lost a fight it would say one of these two lines:

"you got a lot to learn before you beat me. try again, kiddo." or
"there's a lot of guys just like you, all over the world"

the 25" dedicated was a bear.

Most of the music in Star Trek Voyager. It sounds like a tone-deaf programmer had just found out about MIDI.

The one line on Gorf I can't understand goes something like:

"I am the Gorfian contesness." At least that's what it sounds like to me. The last word isn't even a word. I can never understand that one.

As for Street Fighter, yeah it sounds like they're talking with marbles in their mouths.
"What strength, but remember there are guys like you all over the world."

I know for a fact, Altered Beast and Golden Axe stole some of their SFX from the movie American Werewolf in London...or rather, SEGA "appropriated" them. :)

That is hilarious. I have never played Gorf but if I do, you bet I will be looking for that part!

Also very true.

I also remember when I would play Star Wars BITD, alot of times you could barely hear Obi Wan say "The Force Will Be With You.....", and the "ya-HOO!!!" line from Han would be all garbled too. But also, this was at a time where there would be other games louder than SW playing all around it, so that would also drown out what was being said.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I can never understand what Q*Bert is saying when he gets hit. :D Talk about garbled.....:D:D

He says "Big Kev Touched Me". Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you asked what I told the officer on duty at the Jackson PD when I left your place last year. Hey, that restraining order expires next week Tuesday!! How time flies.

I can happily say that I can understand everything that's said by my Berzerk cab. I guess Stern hired a better phoenetics teacher.. :D

Shit

The extension paperwork is still pending though.

Just remembered 2 more.. In Lucky and Wild-

1. when the game ends, and you're asked to "Continue", one of the players (I think Lucky) says: "KON-tinn-YOO???" It almost sounds like he just had a stroke, and he's got his speech therapist there helping him to get it all back.

2. at the same time as #1 above, I'm guessing it's the "Wild" guy, says: "WHADDAWEDO?" but it sounds really corny, almost like doo-dle-eee-DO!

Ikari Warriors. When I first hooked mine up to verify before selling it, I thought there was a problem during attract mode. Loaded it up in MAME and sure 'nuff, it sounded like shit there too.

Xevious. Not sure why, but the sounds those little disc ships make when shot, just aren't what I envision they should be sounding like. It's a cool sound, but just odd for an explosion sound.

B-17 Bomber FTMFW!!!!

I know it's not an arcade game but dang that thing still haunts me......

Terry, I think it says "I am the Gorfian consciousness"; which is still weird. And I'm not 100% sure that I'm correct! lol

Thats how I've always interpreted it.
Mine also has the high freq. whistle. I kind of remember it that way BITD.
I always wondered how they got Stephen Hawking to do the voiceover.:D

I agree with the comments about Gorf, but Wizard of Wor has some of its own issues too. Although the speech in Strider is easier to understand, between the second and third stages the speech almost overlaps, which I though was a goof.
