So I've been playing around with Google Sketchup (Thank's for the models Goz!) because I'm out of room and trying to optimize. Here's what I have currently. Notice that there are three games outside the room. Well, clearly they won't all fit in there so some are going to have to go. The three outside are Neo Geo, Gravitar and Omega Race. The Gravitar inside the game room is actually a Black Widow but I couldn't find a model for that. The 2 large red cabinets are Nintendo display cabinets that house parts of my Pez collection so they can't go away. The other red box is a Pez vending machine that I'd really like to hang onto as well.

Clockwise from the top is: Tempest, Black Widow, Asteroids Deluxe, Tron, Robotron, F14-Tomcat pin, Star Wars, Centipede (Arcade SD), Ice Cold Beer, Spider Man (Mame cab)

Anyway, just throwing it out there for suggestions to anyone who would like to chime in. I want to be sure to have plenty of room to play and also to display my collection. Thoughts on improvements?

The missing wall on one side of the room was just left off to make it easier to work with but in reality it's just a solid wall with a single large window in the middle of it.

How big is that room?

About 19' 4" X 17' 9".

The couch is the obvious choice of things to take out. But I like having a comfortable place for people to sit. Plus there are shelves above the couch that would have to come out then (Pez again).

I'm also not 100% convinced that more games = more fun. Maybe I just need to hold firm at 10 games and cycle some of them out. But I thought maybe someone would have some ideas on how to optimize the space a bit more.

By taking out the work table and smaller display shelf, all the games could fit nicely. Even with the couch, pez shelfs and pez dispenser, and fridge in there.

gonna be tough for 4 to play spider-man with that layout (was thinking maybe swap it with the fridge but don't think that will help either), I have the same issue with more than 1 3/4p cab :(

What?!? Goz, say it ain't so! Clearly, someone has been spending far too much time working on books...;)

Seriously though - I have some experiance with optimizing space... I have a couple of ideas. If you could send me your sketchup files I'll see what I can do.

nice, i am having the same issue. been trying very hard not to take the sofa out, but sometime i like to sit there and watch tv among the games! btw f-14 is a very cool pin for the money!

Thanks Goz, I like what you have done. Not sure I can give up the table just because it's my only work space. I have no garage so all work done on games has to take place right there in that room too. Which is part of the reason I've stayed with the open plan before. But this is creative...let me tinker with it a little.

I stuck my sketchup file here if anyone wants to tinker with it: http://www.filehosting.org/file/details/395217/gameroom.skp

Hopefully, that's all that is needed. Oh, and I really need to keep the fridge in this room. Moving stuff into the adjoining bedroom isn't going to fly, unfortunately. :)

Thanks again!

If the table is your problem, why not get one of those plastic tables with the folding legs from costco or wherever, so you can put it away easily when not in use?

That's a good idea. I need the workspace so that would solve that problem. Although the little table does get used when we have guests over as well. It's a place to put snacks and drinks mostly. The cabinet next to the fridge is also a snack cabinet. Has a microwave on top. A bowl full of microwavable popcorn packets, napkins, plates, etc. So that corner is really the place to get and enjoy snacks. Plus my rain lamp hangs in that corner. :)

I have an idea of possibly putting a small restaurant style booth over in the corner where the couch is though. That would give me a table and a seating area. If I could find one that would fit. Might only have room for a bench on one side though. Not sure how much space they take.

How much do you really need those display cases? Could they move?

Hey Goz, what happened to the image that was attached here? I liked it and went make to make something similar...but it's gone.

Ok, here's a modified version of what I recall from Gozer's plan. Not sure if it really works or not. I replaced the couch with a restaurant style booth (which I need to find still) which also eliminated the need for the other table. So two pieces of furniture went out and one came in. But the new one seats 4 instead of just 2. Cool. :)

Not sure there's enough room between the rows of games though. It's only like 2 1/2 feet which I could possibly stretch up to three if I really encroach on the doorway. It doesn't seem like enough to me though.

Also, if people are playing Foose or bubble hockey they will be blocking key walkways I think.

But with this layout I only need to get rid of one game....that's why there's no Gravitar in there, but everything else is. I am still open to eliminating another game or two if it makes it work way better.

Thoughts?

Buuuuump for input for the guy who isn't as cool as Phet but would still like to hear peoples opinions anyway.

Is that row going to be wide enough if I have 20 people over and people are milling about? Or should I eliminate a few games and keep the open layout?

Errrr. My son just pointed out that the door next the the foosball table opens in toward the table. So people playing will have to contend with the door when people come in. I can move it over some...but I may have to go back to the drawing board anyway.

Maybe swap the foos and the fridge and put the microwave on top of the fridge? Might be too hard to reach for kids, but it would solve the door problem.

The 6 games facing each other are going to be tight, so put the games that are rarely played across from a popular one. Put a seldom played one next to the Neo if possible too. People really seem to spread out and jump around a lot when playing some of those games.

Most importantly; keep trying to take over the spare room. lol
