Saw where someone is trying to sell a Space Invaders Deluxe. They state "It will play for about 20 minutes and then restart, and after awhile it will stop playing altogether."

Is this a power supply issue? Something wrong with the board? Trying to do some homework before I consider making the purchase.

Thanks

It can be both.. As the description is vague.

I'd start with the ps, as 90% of all issues are power related.. Replace the fuse holder, as they weaken with age..

I use this info when testing a SI or SID power supply: http://www.elektronforge.com/TestMdwPS.htm

If the game is nice and cheap enough, I'd pop for it. As you know the monitor works and game does come on.. Heh, that's half the battle.

If the "restart" is a Tilt issue, then it could be several things (BTW, I'm assuming it's a Bally SID and not a Taito):

1) The coin door tilt switch could be misadjusted and tilts the game from the slightest movement.

2) I've seen a regular SI get stuck in Tilt and cause continual resets or get stuck in the Tilt error. I bumped the +5 up to about 5.15 and it went away...

Isn't the "tilt" or slam door switch something that would happen immediately when the game was turned on if it was stuck? Not 20 minutes later.. It could be very sensitive, leaves to close.. But I'm thinking it's ps or heat when the game warms up..

+1

That is what I am thinking also. Can of compoent cooler should be on hand for when the game comes in and new power supply.

Lets try the simple stuff first.
- Did you clean the connector? Loose or poor connection maybe the cause of the board not getting enough voltage.
- Checking the tilt switch is a simple thing to do..
- A can of freeze spray will determine if the it a thermal issue. A transistor on the power supply going out might cause this start and stop after 20 minutes.
- See if you can adjust the voltage up after cleaning the connections.

He has not purchased it yet..

And if it is a game you want....DON'T POWER UP IN FRONT OF SELLER. Just get that thing home first!!!!

Sometimes. But I played a different game not long ago where I was pretty far into a game then had it reset. Took a while to figure out it was from my knee bumping the coin door slightly and triggering a too-close tilt switch...

Did you read his post? He doesnt own the game, its a game for sale he is think about buying. So no, he didnt try any of that. :D

Anyways, like everyone else has been saying. Prolly a voltage or heat issue. If the game is priced right and you want it, grab it! Anything can be fixed.

Did you say something?
I guess nothing new or constructive.

There is always the option to buy a rebuilt power supply or find a friend who has a Space invader or space invade deluxe. It a quick way to isolate what board or part is having the issues.
