My 11 year old son was doing some chores and decided to see if he could dance on top of a broken cinder block...

That's supposed to be his arm a couple inches above his wrist. The 25.3 degree measurement is supposed to be 0 degrees... meaning straight and *NOT* broken. :(

His threshold for pain was described to us as "extremely high" by the Orthopedic doctor in the ER today. See... he did this Thursday evening around 5:30pm and we didn't go to the doctors until 11am this morning since it didn't hurt "that much". ;) Yeah... right buddy.

The huge "swelling" we thought we felt was actually the bone pushing against his skin. The doc said that it really wasn't that swelled.

So... after 6-7 hours in the doctors office and ER what do you think he wanted to do? Play games of course. He even talked me into stopping at Game Stop on the way home to pick up some 3DS games(sorry Casey, we would have stopped over to your shop but we've cleaned you out of good 3DS games).

Pinballs are out... and I'm not sure he'll be able to play any of the arcade games with buttons and a joystick but Pac-Man should be doable at least. :D

Jeff sorry to hear this. My son just turned 18. When he was your sons age he started breaking bones. Every year he broke something else.

My daughter broke her wrist when she was 10. Fooling around on her razor scooter... with no wrist guards. I was always on her case about wearing them and she would try to "forget to put them on"... she's a cluts and needless to say it happened.

It was visibly offsett from it's normal position... It was kind of tough to look at... very swollen. The hard part was when the doc set it... That really bothered me, cause it really hurt her.

I broke my right arm about that same age when I was screwing around in the yard with some cousins. I jumped forward and my right arm came down stiff a little before my left. Broke it between wrist and elbow, and cracked it just above elbow. It hurt pretty bad, though, and I had to convince my parents it was broken. they finally took me to the hospital where it was confirmed and I got a cast put on.

And this happened TWO DAYS into summer vacation. :( I didn't get the cast off until THREE DAYS before school started back up...

Ha, I broke my forearm, once, when I was a kid.

Doc. called it a green bone fracture or something.

In any instance, the cast got a lot of attention at school--esp. from the girls. :)

They were all wanted to be doctors an nurses 'n stuff--so :) me.

Anyways, what ever I had must have been contagious--cause two other kids broke their arms too while I had my cast. :D

IMHO, only bad part about having a cast was that I could ride my bike to the arcades--until I got my short cast put on. ;) That and I couldn't go swimming at all. :(

It could be worse....MUCH WORSE.

When I was 7 I got a spiral fracture in my leg. I was in traction in the hospital for 30 days. I was then in a body cast for close to 2 months. It was PLASTER and completely went up my entire leg including my waist to completely immobilize it and had a hole cut in the front and one in the back. Of course it was not a walking cast which meant doing a crab crawl everywhere.

Just to put things in perspective a bit....

Looks like he is enjoying the Morphine or my personal favorite Demerol

That sucks Jeff. Hopefully the little guy will feel better soon. Give him my best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I have to say you have some of the best behaved kids. Also, very respectful of the games.

Guess he will have to stick with pac style games for a while. Or you guys can play in tandem.

Get well soon!

I broke my left hand ring finger (the bone where the ring is on) 4 days before the N64 came out and had surgery (turned out to be a cancer eating away my bone,-almost lost my finger and almost my hand- and is still cancer free) two days later, and the next day was the N64 launch. I didn't let my broken finger in a full wrist cast prevent me from playing some Mario 64. Couldn't wrap my hand around controller, used thumb in a weird angle to do the analog stick and used my right ring and pinkie fingers to hit the z trigger underneath.

Give your son my best wishes/regards towards his speedy recovery, Jeff!

Although I have[thankfully] never broken bones, I did suffer a near-sprain in my ankle once[not fun].

I second what has been said about your children/their appreciation of the classics, that was evident at the 2011 Vidiot For A Day!

Who says that today's kids DON'T enjoy vintage gaming?

That's why you should have a Robotron or at least a Smash TV. :D That's why Eugene Jarvis made it, cause he broke his arm and wanted something to play.

Tell Eugene Jr. to get better soon.

Just getting home from a wedding in Rochester and checked out the forums... wow... thanks for all the well wishes. I'll be sure to show him all the replies tomorrow.

Right now he's sharing his cast frustrations with Mom up in bed... poor kid is realizing how many things are affected by having a cast and also how long 6-8 weeks are. :(

Thanks again for all the well wishes. :beerchug:

When I put my arm through a window when I was a kid they never game me anything for the pain just sewed me up and sent me home. Never gave me anything when I broke my arm as a kid either. The only time I have ever got pain killers is when I snapped the tendon in my middle finger and they put a rod in my finger so it could heal. I have to say though they game me Tramadol/acetaminophn for that but it did next to nothing for the pain. The bottle says to take 1 to 2 tablets so I take a 2nd an felt like I was going to die lost an entire nights sleep staying a wake all night.

The only thing I have ever broke was a toe when I was 4 years old. I dropped a stool on it that I used to play pinball on. Other then that my only other arcade injury was I messed up my right knee moving a Golden Tee Live, but nothing broke. Good luck for a speedy recovery and glad to see kids only 6 years younger than me enjoying pinball and classic video games. Now just buy him a pole position and they can share in the world of broken things :p just kidding, but again, good luck!
