What mods or newer, enhanced versions of classic games would you like to see made? I'm talking about games built on the original code that run on actual arcade hardware, not custom games that run off regular computers like Fix It Felix.

The discussion about modding Discs of Tron for multi-player got me thinking of the topic, but rather than risk hijacking that thread I thought I'd start one.

My two cents:

Ms Gorf - I'd love to see something playable made with the existing source code that's been preserved from the author's 8" disks. I've heard rumors that there were people working on it but that was quite a while ago.

Rocket Racer - Someone compiled a recovered version of the source code but it crashes at the title screen. I don't know it's current status.

Hovercraft - One of the last vector games made and it was finished but never released. Supposedly someone has a print out of the source code but I don't know whether it's complete or what it's current status is.

Frenzy - I think it's a game begging for some serious mods, like more robots, additional speech, new weapons and more level bosses.

Popeye - I think it's ripe for the Donkey Kong II/ Remix treatment, I always thought the game was in desperate need of additional levels and that it sucked having only 3.

Tempest 2: Lethal Voltage - Getting back to the multi-player theme I always thought it would have been cool to make a multi-player two-linked-cabs version of Tempest where you shoot at each other from either ends of the tube and enemies come out of cracks in the middle.

Agreed.

Also this:

I can't even believe that I started that thread almost 9 years ago. Where does time go?

Back in 2017, I worked with John Kowolski to get serial # 001 of the Donkey Kong Jr. Remix kit in the hands of Jason Burch, who had built a custom cabinet to debut at the Zapcon 5 show (I linked it below if you were curious). During our chat sessions over the weeks to the show, I had briefly asked what he planned to do in the future and after doing both DK Remix and DKJr. Remix. He had no plans to do another remix project, since it was VERY time consuming. I specifically asked about Popeye as a Remix kit as well and said that he didn't plan on it either.

Fast forward years later and HighScoreSaves releases the Ultimate DK kit which incidentally has even more "game modes" along with the Remixes. Perhaps a kit could be developed for Popeye that does something similar from HSS?

DK Jr. Remix - Live at Zapcon (4/29/2017):

I Robot features variable height terrain on level one and then promptly never does anything else with that capability the rest of the game. It would be cool to see more levels that use the feature.

TRON: A skill step would be nice.

X-Men: Take the power ups and move combos from the Japanese release and combine with the larger map of the US release to create the ultimate beat-em-up.

Would love to see some new Star Wars levels.

I was going to say "none", but then you wrote this and I have to agree.
Would really like the vector ROTJ completed too.

Beat me to it.

Or at least make something better than that stupid asteroids level in Empire Strikes Back!

I doubt anyone could make an actual version to run on the original hardware, which is insanely rare anyway, but I'd love to see someone make Bouncer.

Up Scope - It'll never happen as it's a rare game and thus no demand, but I'd love it if someone removed that awful depth charge level which absolutely destroys the games pace.

Athena - That game desperately needs a hack to make it easier or at least take the limit off continues, it's an incredibly hard game and near impossible to get past the first 3 or 4 levels.

The asteroid level did suck. With Jason's vector wars board I think there is a chance of some development.

The whole level feels haphazardly thrown together like they ran out of ideas and time then got desperate.

"Damn it we need one more level...
Uh.... ASTERIODS! There, now program that and shut up!"
