I know we have seen pictures of arcades from the 80's. I have yet to see that many pictures of the major companies (Midway, Williams, Taito) manufacturing plants from way back. It would be neat to see them if they are out there.

I used to have a book simply called "Video Games" that was from 1983-ish. It had a blue cover and featured quite a few pics of Joust in various stages of completion in manufacturing. The book has managed to evade me for a few years now, but if I find a copy I'll be sure to scan it.

I think I've got that book - Video Games by Daniel Cohen. I pulled it out but there aren't any pictures of Joust in it. You might be thinking of something else -- and I would be really interested in more details if you could find that book.

I've got a nice stack of video games books from back in the day, but none that have any manufacturing pictures in it.

I think it was part of a series aimed at children. Similarly written and styled books intended to explain different aspects of the modern world. Are you sure the one by Daniel Cohen is the same one? I distinctly remember seeing pictures of Joust in various stages of completion in the book.

I think I was definitely born too late and in the wrong state. I think working for Atari back in their hayday would have been a blast!

There's a stupid movie called "A Night in Heaven" from 1983 that has a one-minute scene where they're in the Centuri factory while they're making Time Pilot machines. Fast forward to 1:02:22.
They used to have the movie on Netflix streaming, but not any more. If you search you'll find some places hosting it online (I just watched it on putlocker.com).

Great pics! I love the Taxi and T2 pics. Very cool. I would love to have seen stuff like that in person back in the day.

I always thought it was neat how all the workers at the Williams plant seemed to be old jewish women!

When you're working on a pinball machine, you just would never put the face with the worker who built your game. I think it's hilarious, it shows all the preconcieved notions we have and the things we assume.

Similarly, most of the new Stern pinball machines are built by hispanic women.

I remember reading a book in about '82 or '83 that was like that. I was 6 or 7. It explained in a kid like way what arcade games were. The only pic I remember from it was a guy with a Defender machine. The game was displaying the crosshatch (white grid) pattern. Its been so long that I don't remember any of what the book actually said.
