Several games toward the end of the 80's had several side scrolling games that eventually ended. I've only finished Rastan, which I thought had a good ending.

As for bad endings, I really disliked the Rolling Thunder ending. I watched a friend who use to finish it quite often. It was kind of anti-climatic. The boss wasn't hard and the hooded guys high-five'n kind of killed it for me.

What were someone of the best/worst game endings?

"THIS ROOM IS AN ILLUSION AND IS A TRAP DEVISUT BY SATAN"

...fuck you, G&G!

GALAXY FORCE.

Such a big, flashy, neat game.
Intense final stage -- no continue -- you better be good!
And then, when you destroy the core...

a couple lines of text.

big whoop.

For Sega 16, the ending to Altered Beast was pretty blah, but Golden Axe's ending with the characters jumping out of the arcade game, then running out of the arcade and down the street was pretty cool. I don't think I ever finished any other actual arcade games. As far as console games, I loved the ending to Metroid. I think I also really loved the ending to Rygar. Kung Fu seemed like a cheap ending.

Karnov's NES ending was horrid. THE END. that's it. I never beat the Arcade one though, hoping it's better.

Back it the day it was always rumoured that at the end of pitfall on the 2600, Pitfall Harry jumps into a jeep and drives off. Not true.

The Dragon's Lair ending was cool at the time but is now kind of disappointing.

I agree Golden Axe was really cool.

Super Mario Bros was weak.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was mediocre at best.

Funny story about G&G...I was in college and a friend of mine bought G&G for the NES and some Hotshot(tropical Schnapps). When we got to the boss and it defeated him we just laughed and kept playing. I had to run over and get pizza and more Hotshot while he played. I don't think I've had Hotshot since.

I never saw SmashTV's ending or its sequel. I recall someone mentioning SmashTV and the "Pleasure Dome", but never saw it.

The ending in Double Dragon is good, in that the two players have to fight each other to win. A nice turnaround from the way the rest of the game was played.

I remember the first time I played it: we were like "wait... we... what?"

Time Soldiers has a pretty bad ending as well. Sure, the final level is tough as nails with no continues, but the final boss is one of the easiest in the game and has only a single, lackluster attack. When you beat the boss (in about 30 seconds), the screen says congratulations as well as the credits.

Such a lame ending for such a fun and challenging game.

Get out! You really fight the other player?!? That would have rocked.

+1 for Metroid having the best old school ending.
"ZomgHolyCrap I was a hot girl all along!"

For arcade. I love that you fight the MC in Smash TV, then end up running through the pleasure dome to pick up the pixelated bikini babes.

I dunno - sometimes I think people really need to ask themselves if the endings are really that bad or you're just being an a-hole and expecting too much.
I don't think any game I've ever finished made me think, "Ya know that ending just kicks ass."
Just sayin...
