Game buying remorse as a kid

I seem to recall renting Silver Surfer MANY times, but I don't remember the game at all, so I can't remember if I liked it or not. If not, I don't know why I'd keep renting it.

Then again, I rented Skate or Die about a million times and I fucking HATED that game. I think I was determined to figure it out, but it didn't have a manual, so I had no idea how to even play the damn thing. I always busted my ass on the vert ramp.

For the vert ramp the best way to get a high score was to have either the NES MAX or Advantage controllers. You had to rotate the control pad or joystick in a circular motion while at the same time pushing the A button to pump the skaters legs to keep momentum. I got plenty of thumb blisters from the vert ramp.

That explains why just button mashing seemed to work best for me. Regardless, I always ended up flat on my face with my eyeball rolling out of its socket or whatever the hell that was.

Looking at a youtube video, my problem was the High Jump, specifically, not the free style mode, though I seem to recall not getting that either. I guess the HJ was a problem since you only got a few passes before it was over.

Hahah when he wrecks it looks like he throws confetti in the air, maybe that's his helmet falling to pieces

What's weird is that the video I watched shows exactly what you just described, but as a kid, all I remember was a white "ball" rolling away from the guy's head, so don't remember the other stuff.

Weird.

T&C Surf designs always frustrated the hell out of me. The skating parts were hard, but fun. The surfing? WTF? Hated it.

I usually enjoyed the games my parents bought me. In fact, I enjoyed just about any game I could get my hands on when I was a kid. Heck, I even played Busby.. Not sure why though.

The only thing that I felt bad about was trading the games in to Funcoland to get new ones. I always wondered if they thought it was because I didn't like it. :/

WTF man, I loved that game! Not the second one so much, or the PSX one, but the first one was a blast, imo.

Did you ever play the 'sequel'? It's a totally different game, and actually somewhat fun, as opposed to the original, which is pretty much unplayable.

That game scared the crap out of me as a kid. I almost shit my pants every time I had to pass one of those damn octopus. I'm still terrified of that game.

I remember when I first got it,I could not find my way out of the first level for a month until the newest issue of gamepro magazine came out.

LMAO at Friday the 13th and Nightmare on elm st.

I think X-Men was an LJN game too.I know Wolverine and Silver Surfer were.SS was hard,Wolverine was too but not nearly as much as SS.The way you had to kill the last boss in Wolverine was pretty cool.SS's ending really sucked if I can recall. One of those....."I busted my ass to beat this game, for this?!" kind of endings.

I could'nt even beat the game with game genie.SS"s level were near impossible because there were so many enemies flying around you could not avoid getting hit, plus everything you hit killed you no matter what it was. AVGN did a revue on it a few years back that was funny as hell and brought back all of my bad memories of SS.

Ah, haven't thought of this in a long time, but it was so painful that I still fill ripped off by it.

I cut grass for one whole month in the 90 degree weather to save up $39.95 + tax for a an Atari 2600 game at the local TG&Y.

I got there and picked some game I thought would be great at that time. Got home and within five minutes realized I had screwed up. It was so forgettable that I don't even remember the name of it anymore.

But being that I was only 12 or 13 years old at the time, I didn't learn my lesson and I cut grass for another month to buy another game. I did better the next time and got the newly released Berzerk. I got my money's worth at of that one though, I still break it out and play it occasionally.

I hear ya! If I remember right, the very last level is like Ghosts N' Goblins hard on horse steroids. We're talking some serious controller throwing going on! I played and played and played that game vowing that I'd beat it.Finally did and......never played it again. So glad my mom rented it for me instead of having bought it.That would have been my buyer's remorse for sure.
