I just had some memories from childhood spring up and I wanted to share. As a kid, did you ever ask for a game for a birthday or xmas, get the game, then find out it sucked SOO bad that you didn't want to play it? I did, and everytime I felt like such an asshole for having my parents spend their VERY hard earned money on shit.

Robocop for NES - Received this on a birthday one year with an early issue of Nintendo Power - it had a Contra cover on it. The Robocop game sucked so bad, I remember the control was absolute shit. I just looked it up and it was Nin Power 12 - with Super C on the cover - May/June 1990!! Wow So I was freaking 8 years old and I distinctly remember feeling like an asshole for having my parents buy that game - I was economically aware at 8 yrs old. LOL

Home Alone 2: LINY SNES - This game was the worst, I remember feeling horrible for this as well - My mother was newly divorced and was probably making 10 bucks or less an hour at the time, and made sure her kid got the game he wanted (but wasn't smart enough to find a review for) for his Super Nintendo for Xmas. It wasn't my only gift that year but a pricey mistake.

Sega CD: I played a good amount of it, but still feel bad that my mom bought this piece of shit. I'm not even going to go into anymore detail on this one.

I still think of this shit from time-to-time, and when I do, I usually end up buying my mom something nice to make up for it. Last time I thought about this I bought her a 42" plasma - weird right? LOL

Moms deserve the best, especially the ones who try so hard to make their kids happy and entertained with their favorite things. Nobody's going to question you on that one.

Game-buying Moms FTW!

My family never bought the kids games and stuff like that. There were a few board games but they were all missing parts for as long as I can remember. Things like Parcheesi and Probe. Great fun those.

Just one game: Contra for NES

friend next door used the 'code' and my new game was finished in no time.

Complete let down.

I haven't used codes or game genies since.

I also had a subscription to NP,so I'd read the reviews and then try to get my parents to rent the ones I was interested in.I was pretty lucky to have 2 rental stores very close by,both with kick ass NES game selections.

I remember the first time my parents rented Mega Man for me....ah what a glorious day! :D

Anyway, back on topic....my parents never bought me any dud games for my birthday or Christmas since I had usually already played all the ones I was interested and I would just tell them to get me my favorite one of the bunch, which was.....drum roll.....the latest Mega Man game!!!!!!!

Also +10000000000000000000000 for any awesome parents who want their kids to be happy!

The only game system I had growing up was the Atari 2600. My grandma bought it for me, and kept it at her house, to encourage me to visit.

I visited every frickin' chance I could! :D

Anyway, the only game I remember being incredibly let down by was Pac-Man. OMG it was the worst port ever. EVER. Sigh.

I'm with you, man. I had NP as well and still have all my issues (about 10 yrs worth). You say that you didn't look at reviews, but such things weren't as easy to come by back then. Sure, you had NP and other magazines, but I go back and read some of those reviews now and I have no idea what they were thinking. I mean, some of that stuff wasn't even good for the time, but we listened to them like gospel.

I too rented most of my games, and I can't think of any in particular that my parents bought that were duds. I'm sure it happened, but I don't recall specifics now. My mom was sure to not buy me games unless I'd played them before, though there were a few exceptions (Mario games, for example).

As for the Sega CD, I didn't buy that thing until years later when Kay-B Toys had them for about $20 a pop. Persionally, I loved the system for the RPGs. Lunar, Vay, Shining Force...those were effing great games.

Now 32X...had T-Mek so score! :D But that one I got for like $5 new, I think...

Most of my gamer's remorse happens now when I just buy games without checking out reviews or demos first. One example would be Meteos on Xbox Live. Shit was awesome on DS...without the touchscreen, that game is balls.

Yeah - Sega CD was best as a $20 purchase! haha

I also agree with the NP reviews. NP was basically a big advertisement, and never spoke much truth on how shitty some of these games were.

I did buy a handful of my own games, with lawn-mowing cash. I hustled the whole neighborhood across town by my Gma's house - for 2 summers I banked for a kid. Anyways, I never felt like shit when I bought myself a game and it turned out bad.
Fester's Quest - played it for a couple hours
Mario is Missing - SNES - Saw it and bought it on the spot, got it home and realized how much of a piece of shit it was. Made myself beat it before I traded it for F-Zero to my neighbor - who was a suckkaaa! :)

Hahaha! You shoulda known better on the Mario is missing game.A mario game without mario....lame! Glad you were able to trade it.How long was it before the guy wanted to give it back to you?

Self-proclaimed momma's boy right here. I remember Christmas of 1989 and opening my present to see it was a brand new Nintendo Game Boy! Remember, it had come out just that summer and probably cost like $150-200. I think I must have played 80 hours of Tetris that week. :)

Even before that, my parents bought my brothers a brand new Nintendo NES when it came out. They got the ROB set. I think it retailed for over $300 (something to that amount). My mom could beat Super Mario Bros. easily which was also a cool thing.

Man, we were spoiled. :D

Yeah, props to moms (and dads) who buy their kids games. If it weren't for them, my brothers and I would probably not have as much of a love for video games.

EDIT: I forgot to mention any of my remorse as a buyer. I'd have to say Castlevania II: Simon's Quest was pretty disappointing. Honestly, without a guide, that game is near impossible. The change from night/day is unbearable. Dracula is just too easy to beat after finally getting to him. I'd say the only thing good about the game is the music and graphics. Glad they redeemed themselves with Castlevania III.

I always read reviews first and if there was no review I would wait for the spoiled ass kid next door to get it,play it,then decide. As a kid I was a hustla making money from allowance, lawn nowing, car washing, and delivering papers so I always had money for the newest games. My first game I ever bought myself with remorse was Milons secret castle. What a steaming pile!! I did it a few more times with The adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle,Festers Quest,Low G Man, and Time Lord to name a few. All were for NES.

Thinking back, the first game I remember buying and having buyer's remorse over was X-Men for NES. Man that game sucked. I seem to remember playing way into it only to hit a dead end and never figuring out how the hell to get passed it.

I have no intention of trying to figure it out now.

hahaha speaking of X-men, how about Silver surfer, and Wolverine?? So much fail

I remember buying Kung-Fu Master for my Apple IIe (which I still have). That game was a major let down on the Apple. Spent my $ on it. Buyers remorse was common as I recall. The home versions never quite lived up to the arcade. :)

Both of those as well - though I never bought them, only rented. I forced myself to "like" Wolverine for NES, though...somehow. A few years ago, I bought a copy from kspiff on here, I think. I always wanted it as a kid and never did. Of course, I've not played it since I got it from him :p

I actually shoplifted that one from my Local Target. I could not gonna drop another $50+ on an NES game at that time, because I had just dropped $50 on Double Dragon earlier that same year. I agree on the beating Dracula thing. I got to him and my heart was pounding and I was like 'Oh shit I'm a goner, this undead fucker is going to waste me!' Then I just threw a bunch of crosses at him and poof, the bitch was dead? Really? I think the only big let down for me was Heavy Barrel on the NES. The arcade version was the shit, but without the LS-360's the game was a bust. Operation Wolf for the NES was another bust.

I actually liked OW,very difficult with the light gun from what I remember. Now, Gotcha! THAT was a bad shooter. It's a damn shame that we would go outside and have more fun with the Gotcha set then we did with the video game.

I loved Simon's Quest and I actually liked Wolverine and Silver Surfer to a lesser degree. For the most part though those LJN games sucked.
