I think I've asked this before, but couldn't find it after searching, has anyone ever roll-painted a Nintendo cab and had it come out decent?

Thanks for your time guys!

Both Rolled......
I have found the key is to use a GOOD quality paint, I usually use Sherwin Williams, and use a FOAM roller......
The paint does have a texture, but if done properly they turn out REALLY nice!!

Keep with the good quality paint. I cheaped out and used rusto and I am very displeased. Looks good from afar but upclose you can notice it.

Thanks!
I ALWAYS use Zinnser's BIN primer. It is shellac based primer. I don't think HD or Lows has it, but I know that Sears Hardware does.
I roll at least 2 light coats, again with a foam roller, and hand sand between coats. USE LIGHT COATS!
I hand sand after the last coat to get things nice and smooth, then roll on my color. I do one side at a time rolling ALL in the same direction the distance of the cab to prevent roller marks. If done right, they almost have a textured laminate look to them....Not smooth like the original finish, BUT, nice non the less!

Awesome, I'm gonna run down and get goods tomorrow. Do you use a satin or semi-gloss?

Thanks again for all your help!

Rustoleum is good quality paint, until you get into automotive paints. Was the problem the paint, the method (rolled?) or the prep? I've sprayed Rustoleum and made it look pretty slick.

I'm rolling early cab RED - I'll either find a paint code or just have them ping a red on my DK CP...Which I think will be close enough.

Home depot does sell Zinsser's BIN primer. I love that stuff. Sure does smell horrible though.

It dries ridiculously fast too, which I like since I'm impatient. :) But keep that in mind when painting. i.e. don't leave a glob of it on too long - roll it out flat right away.

I just finished painting my Donkey Kong Jr. cab using a roller. I would have preferred to spray it, but it's freezing out these days and my garage is unheated. I sanded the cab to rough up the factory finish, then used 4 coats if Zinsser BIN, sanded it totally smooth, then rolled on 4 light coats of the orange in an oil-based semi-gloss. I had a tough time getting rid of the roller marks for some reason... I didn't have that problem on my last cab and I was using latex even, but after many passes rolling up and down the full height of the cab, I managed to get it looking really nice.

Phet has done some rolling with really good results. If you have a red cab already, I would match to your cab though instead of matching to the CPO.

I've gotten really hesitant on messing with my red cab. I wish we knew how the original finish was done. It definately looks to me like some sort of paint that was heated in the finishing process to get that finish. If you look carefully you can see the paint, it's not 100% free of imperfection like a plastic or laminate, but its really smooth and glossy, like it's got a clear coat on it. I've even thought about taking mine to my auto-paint guy.

anyone want to share how to paint the black areas? with a brush?

Definitely not that way. Because the areas aren't so wide (front edge->back), you can use rattle can spray paint just fine and not worry about overlap marks. I'd recommend a semi-gloss or satin. Do not use flat. Get it smooth, sand with 220, put on a couple of coats a few minutes apart. If it ends up looking like ass, wait a day or so, sand with fine sandpaper, and shoot another coat on.
