So now that I have my Midway/Namco/Taito row working 100% I think my opinions are changing.

OK, so my row goes like this:

Space Invaders, Galaxian, Galaga, Gaplus, Galaga '88 (in an yet unfinished cabinet)

After being able to play them all, I have come to the conclusion that I actually like Galaxian over Galaga. I like the required precision, the simple rules, and the difficulty.

Galaga feels more an more like a button masher. Gaplus is so friggen difficult, and Galaga '88 is just so much fun. Don't get me wrong I love them all, I am just surprised that I am liking Galaxian more than Galaga lately.

This post isn't to start a huge debate, just sharing my feelings about them.

Precisely the reason that Galaxian and Galaga were left as a "tie" at number 4 in my book of the top 50 games of all time.

I like galaxian a lot. And I love galaga. There the two most played games on my 60in1. I try and try to play gaplus so much but can not get past stage 4 no matter how much I try. The stage where the stars start going backwards. I love the series a lot. 88 is a lot of fun as well. I'm in the 100ks with galaga now and 300k with fast fire lol

I like Galaga better, personally. But I do like the sounds on Galaxian much more, especially the pulsing sound of the armada. It reminds me of a semi truck idling!

I am sure I could do better, but when I lose my double ship I want to quit.

As for Gaplus, I am not much better than you are. CrazyKongFan is amazing at Gaplus.

You're missing out on a big part of the fun.

One of the sublime joys of Galaga is being on your last ship in the later levels, and somehow fighting and surviving through enough waves with your piddly little one-shooter to earn another bonus ship.

Then, you have a chance to get dual shots...

...and, suddenly, after being pushed to the brink, you're kicking butt again. :D

I haven't made it past Stage 15.

I have swapped as well, I used to be a big Galaga fan before I got into this stuff. Now that I have actually given Galaxian a chance, I like it better from a gameplay, sound standpoint. I do not like the repetitiveness though.

I sold my Galaga because is so easy its boring , and with the Money I got Galaxian because it is a much better game . More Challenge and fun , its intense and you gotta stay focused playing it . Galaga is for the guys that aren't good at games and since its easy it makes them feel like they have some gaming skill so they like it .

That's what happens when it doesn't cost you a quarter per game to play. I never used to walk away from a game until it was over but now if I lose a ship in Galaga I move on to another game and try again later. With Galaxian I keep playing until it is over because I still suck at it but want to play better every time.

What version of Gaplus are you running? I only play it in MAME now and prefer the version that has blood type in the high score table.

That's not very far.

Such comments are null and void unless poster of said comment can back it up with a screenshot / video of themselves eclipsing 400K on Galaga. ;)

There's some truth to this. You master a coupla evasive moves and memorize a few places to be and not to be at particular moments and you can feel like you're rockin and rollin on Galaga. My cousin Tommy, who could play a game of Defender, Space Invaders, or PacMan forever when he was 8 or 9, could as an adult literally drink, smoke, flirt, watch football, and damned near shoot pool while racking up millions on Galaga.

I just bested my Galaga score this weekend. I'm at 214000 now. I suck at the challenge stages though, I need to practice those because you can pump your score big time with those. Ill have to throw a 60 in 1 in my cocktail and revisit galaxian because I remembered not liking it but with any multi game I sorta just run through all of them and don't appreciate any of them.

Ugh, you reminded me! At first I just had a Gaplus boardset which I sold to play for my Galaga '88 board after I got a whole Gaplus cabinet. It turns out that the boardset I sold was the Namco version with the bloodtypes and while it is hard, it isn't murder like the Midway version I have in my cabinet. I have the hardest version. I wish I still had that Namco boardset.

I am hoping I can just do a ROM swap and convert this board to the Namco version.

I would love to see this, I am sure it is like watching CrazyKongFan play Gaplus, he is just amazing at it.

Here he is playing while I am talking to him and the fire button is flakey. Also this is the harder version. I watched him play his Namco version to parsec 65!

JSYK, the 60-in-1 version of Galaxian is HORRIBLE!!! The sounds are all wrong and so are the colors.

The Bonus stage is the easiest part , you just have to know where to sit , not move and just shoot and you'll kill all the enemies with your eyes closed .

Yeah on some of the waves I do just that but I usually hit only like 75 percent. I just hadn't learned where to be yet. The 214000 was achieved over level 25 but don't remember which one. I'm thinking by that level with better bonus stage scores ill break 300 easy. And yeah double ships makes it much easier if you can keep it alive :)

On a majority of the bonus stages, you need to move to kill all the enemies.

except on gaplus or galaga '88 (don't remember which one) where not shooting at all on the bonus stages gives you an automatic perfect score

I prefer Galaga honestly, I like the faster gameplay

That is '88. But you don't really get the same score because if you shoot them you also get points for shooting them.

I picked up a Galaxian a month or so ago. I never thought I would like it as much as I do, but I love the precision firing not rapid fire aspect.
