Got in a couple Galaxian boards a few days ago. After testing them and running them for a while one of them went out on me. Stopped booting. Figured it was probably a socket issue as the board still has the original sockets.
As I hate old Midway sockets (you know the ones) I decided to replace the sockets on the board with ones that are a little more reliable. Instead of wasting 6 sockets for the program ROMs I decided to just do a single ROM mod on the board. I found a couple how-to pages, but almost nothing as far as pictures. So I figured I go ahead and post up a picture of how I did mine.
I hate soldering to chip legs for these things, so I always try to find other pads or vias to solder to. So, here's the alternate points I used instead of attaching the wires to chip legs.
Side note: After running the wires and looking at everything, I think it would probably look a little nicer, from the top, to run all the wires through the hole on the board at the top (pin count wise) of the socket. But since I had already cut the wires, it'd've been a waste to toss them out just for that.
Edit: I guess the how-to probably wouldn't hurt?
Combine all the Galaxian ROM images into a single ROM file. Or just find it pre-made online.
Take a 28-pin socket and bend out pins 1, 2, 20, 22, 23, 26, 27, and 28.
Tie pins 1, 27, and 28 together and connect them to +5.
Tie pin 2 to 7D pin 5.
Tie pin 20 to ground.
Tie pin 22 to 8E pin 13.
Tie pin 23 to 7D pin 3.
Tie pin 26 to 7D pin 7.
