galaxian cabaret?

thats a conversion, that cabinet is a gorf cabinet. A dedicated Galaxian cabinet is very similar to a regular mini pacman. And the cabine twill have "galaxian" stenciled on the side

I disagree. It's not a conversion. That is the third Galaxian in that cabinet, with the alternate marquee and bezel (GORF, yes that is correct), that has been shown in the last several months on KLOV. There was two other threads talking about it. The first two are believed to be factory conversions, not field conversions, so they are dedicated, just in an alternate cabinet. There should be labels/tags inside that say something like "Galax Mini" with a serial number and it should match the number stamped in the back of the cabinet.

It would be a real shame to MAME such a hard to find cabinet and nice example of a Galaxian mini. If it's a monitor issue, that will likely be easy to fix or to simply replace the monitor or chassis.

*finally* got the CL lister to reply. off to have a look tonight (unless he turns into another CL flake). will let you know how it goes...

If it were me, I would buy it, but I like Galaxian and I like mini's. Take a close look at the marquee when you get there. If it looks silk screened and it's glass, I'd say it's factory and worth buying if only to sell to another collector. Silk screened and plastic I'd still say it's factory. Colored with crayon on a napkin? Well then pass. :)

FWIW, I'd pay $250 for that without batting an eyelash if you were local to me and had it for sale. More if it was in really good shape.

Looks just like mine. This very well could be #3 of this same style (which I dubbed as the "Type II" style Galaxian cabaret `cause of the "II" stamped on the factory tag inside). One other was posted previously before mine. I think this pretty much settles it re: whether or not it was an official factory machine.

Go get it!

i'm hoping he doesn't flake out. it's turned into one of those "meet me in the parking lot of Wal-Mart because my house is too hard to find" deals. sigh.

OK, so the guy didn't flake out, and an hour later (road trip with the kids!) and $100 poorer, i'm the proud owner of what looks to be the third of the "Galaxian Mini Type II" machines.

it has all the hallmarks of the previous two of these factory conversion galaxian minis, *but*, it's missing the tag that gives it its number (you'll see from the picture where the dust-mark is where the tag *should* be) :/. there are two green tags, one of which is labeled "Galax Mini 34" the other "Galax Mini 67", but i think those are just service tags.

guy i bought it from said he bought it from some family friends in southern arizona to convert to a MAME, but ran out of time. he said they had had it in their store since original purchase. who knows if it's true, but it might be.

it's in pretty good shape. couple of minor dings in the cabinet, a bit of peeling wood veneer on one side, and a lock that will have to have some work where it was (it just screwed right out of the front, so the lock itself is gone). the bezel is glass; a bit worn, but at least in reasonable shape. the marquee has one small crack in the lower left corner. the CPO is pretty worn, but not terrible. original WG monitor inside (haven't poked at what version).

it plays blind, though has a weird high pitched whine when you move the joystick. fire button works and you can hear the baddies getting killed. monitor has vertical collapse. i would hope that's easy to fix, relative to the monitor hell i went through with the WG4900 on my Q*bert and that i'm currently going through with the EZ20 on my DK/DK3.

so, overall, a good evening :)...

Just checked the wood on the back of my cabinet to see if the # was stamped into it - can't find anything.

Does the PCB have a serial # on it? If it's been in their store since they bought it, maybe it has a matching-numbers PCB.

I'm gonna go play a game or two on mine in honor of you saving this thing. :D

not sure where the number would be on the PCB, but i'm gonna pull it out anyway to clean it up so i'll check then...

just pulled the board. both the ceramic resistor up top and the daughter board are stamped 31239. dunno if this means the board was a replacement?

worse news is that the PCB connector is damaged (see pic). sigh. is there a way to fix that kind of damage?

EDIT: and if i can't fix it, will any galaxian board work as a replacement, or does it have to be a specifically "mini" one?

Any Galaxian board will work, but it shouldnt be very hard to repair that edge connector. Theres a few tutorials scattered about.
