Galaga- worth keeping?

I just picked up a pretty nice Galaga the other day for $200 that was giving the seller some electrical grief. I figured at that price I should go look at it. After cleaning up and resetting a few connectors, it is working 100% now. I already have Galaga on my ArcadeSD, so I am not sure I want to keep this one and have it take up space in the gameroom. I like Galaga, but it is not one of my favorites. I would kind of feel bad about "flipping" it so fast, but now that I have it I am not sure I want to keep it. The cabinet is MDF (no swelling) and somebody had installed a switcher at some point. I do approve of the way the switcher was installed, as the original harness is uncut and there is a new harness with nice new connectors just for the switcher. Any idea what I could sell it for? Anyone in Sacramento looking for any trades? Thoughts?

Thanks,
Chris

If your Galaga is in good electronic shape, then it becomes all about the cosmetics. What sort of shape are the marquee, bezel, CP, side and front art in? The buttons & joystick? What's the dirt level like inside? Torn labels on the back of the machine? How's the speaker? Coin box? Keys & lock? Counters working?

It's a common game. For pricing yours out, the devil will be in the details...

So you were the one who got it. Haha. Well, if you really don't feel like keeping it, I'll buy it for $200. ;)

I regret selling my Galaga I used to own. :(

It's a perfect game for a 60-1. There, I said it. Chances are whomever you sell it to as a dedicated Galaga will do exactly that, and try to flip it for $800.

I think that's why you don't see as many Galagas for sale as in the old days. They have been snatched up and converted.

Personally, I would never knowingly sell a game to someone who intended to ruin the originality, and if someone does it to a game that I sold them, I will never do business with them again.

awwwwcomeon... at least offer him two fiddy...

no they won't... A galaga is hard to turn into a 60:1 cause they'll have to rip out thejoystick and put in a 4 way. The mounts are entirely different.

Completely replace the harness as well. Unless you have a JAMMA to Galaga adapter which aren't readily available.

That isn't exactly expensive. When you can sell a game for $800 instead of $400 it's an easy decision to make. And a lot of the time people that flip these things have all the parts on hand.

Two Bits has it for $39. Other people have it for sale too.

C'mon guys...

I had no idea. Good to know.

I think what we're trying to say, is it will take some work to convert it and though I understand your logic in getting top dollar by multigaming it, I wouldn't even suggest such a thing. If it was always about top dollar, then most guys would part every dedicated game they wanted to sell. But some guys aren't just about the business.

If he keeps it, good deal. If he sells it, I say sell the dedicated machine which would be $400-500 I'm guessing. He'd still come out way ahead.

it's not the cost... it's quite bit of work to re-work the control panel for another joystick entirely. They can also probably just get another replacement CP but that adds additional cost when they are trying to do a $$ Flip.

Yes, I would agree. We'll see what happens. I always hate to see these games survive for so long and then end up getting trashed, even a game that was made in vast numbers like Galaga. When I got back into collecting 7 years ago it was the first game I bought. I don't play it much anymore but for whatever reason I can't seem to part with it.

I hate stuff like this. I am against multi-gamming classics, but it looks like with about $150 in parts a person could get a new control panel set up with a multi-board and sell this for $800- is that what I am hearing? I doubt I will spend the time to do this, it is too bad that there is so much money to be made by converting a classic. The only thing I can see so far on this thing is that someone installed plexi over the CP and drilled extra holes to do so. My OCD side is bothered by this so I know I would end up ordering a new CP and overlay anyway if I end up keeping it. It looks like new panels are around $40 and overlay about $45.

Thanks for the input guys.

I think the key word is "try" to sell it for $800.

If you are not going to keep it I would just sell it as-is for $450 obo.

Don't feel bad about selling. I always wanted a Galaga. It was the second game I acquired. I got bored of it in less than a year. It always starts out exactly the same, and the difficulty doesn't really ramp up for a long time. I sold it.

I like the super hard Atari/Williams games or (even better) the ones where you can choose the starting level.

If you are REALLY feeling bad, sell it for $300 to someone on here who will keep it classic. $100 bucks + karma isn't a bad day's work.

Amen to that. That is what a collector community is all about.
