I just picked up a project Galaga with a broken fire button. I've been checking the usual suspects and I'm a bit confused.

I checked the connections on the rapid fire board. It doesn't fire on either header.

I've metered the button with power on, it is getting +5V.

Here's the confusing part. If I take the control panel off entirely and check for continuity at the break plug, every single component comes up as shorted. The joystick, start buttons, fire button. But everything works except the fire button. How is this possible? I even did the same thing on my Gaplus control panel to make sure I was doing it right. Everything on Gaplus tested normal.

Help!

Make sure you have the edge connector on the right way. It's possible to put it on backwards. The game will come up but won't work properly , so I have been told ;)

Take a picture of it with the board installed and one of us can tell you if it looks right.

Hmm, looking at the pinout that might actually be possible. Although wouldn't the player 1 button start a 2 player game then?

In any case, I'll check it out and report back.

There's a custom chip with dirty legs or a poor socket contact...

Another cause are those pesky flat ceramic resistor packs that need replacing.

You'll probably get a look at it. :p As soon as you're taking work again, I plan on you bulletproofing my board.

I'll try reseating chips tomorrow. Fingers crossed I don't break any legs off.
