I have looked on KLOV to see differences but it's not very helpful. Is the game play the same just different looking ship and enemies? Do the enemies on both capture ships with a beam? I have played Galaga and love it but have never played Galaxian. Would anyone chime in please? Thanks. J.J.

Galaxian is slower and has less tricks and features, probably the least fun of the two. Theyre both fun, but Galaga is better. Galaxian has no ship capturing.

Galaga has more features, like capturing ships, double ships, and bonus stages which Galaxian lacks. On Galaga, the ships fly in to make the formations, whereas the formations are already there at the beginning of a stage on Galaxian.

other differences:

- Galaga has the enemy ships fly in; Galaxian they just appear already in their formation.
- Galaxian allows only one player ship at a time, no dual-fire linked ships.

edited to add:
to make it a true double-post, Galaga also has bonus stages!

If speaking real arcade hardware, here's my take:

Galaga boards are very tempormental, expensive and hard to keep running unless a complete rebuild is done on them. (Due to crappy wafer resistor packs, ribbon interconnect cables, crappy sockets and tarishing custom chips)

While Galaxian boards are cheap, plentiful, and can be modified to run over 50 variations of the game with simple eprom changes, or relatively easily/cheaply modified to run 4, 8 or 16 various games at once. Weakest point on the Galaxian boards is the daughter board that can be fixed by replacing one socket and putting in a larger single rom and running a couple wires, or put in a 4-in-1 and run like 8 wires.

Both have unique gameplay and get past the more booring (but still classic) Space Invaders. Both have their place. Galaxian is MUCH harder even on the easy setting.

Thanks for all the replies. Galaga seems to be the one I am wanting. Damn Galaxian's seem to be sooooooooooo much cheaper though. I don't want to pay more than $400 for a working Galaga and that seems to be hard to do so far.

I like Galaxian better .

The game play feels very solid and you have to time and make each shot count , whereas Galaga you just keep tapping the fire button .

Galaxian is intense and Galaga is more laid back easier .

galaga is generally more popular because any 5 year old can play it and put up a good score. Galaxian while a little no frills is much more challenging even if it has no "challenging" stages.

Get both. You can build an adapter to play Galaxian in your galaga cab or vice versa. Galaxian PCBs do not cost that much.

Or until you get enough coin, buy a 48 or 60 in 1 with JAMMA cab and you get a lot more bang for your buck and both Galaxian and Galaga games granted the sounds are not perfect but the gameplay is OK. You can always add the dedicated PCB(s) with adapter(s) later.

Or.... :D

Got any links on how to build an adapter to play a Galaxian in a Galaga ?

Galaxian's side art is over-the-top amazing! Galaga's side art doesn't do much for me.

Galaxian is for men.
Galaga is for boys.

Exactly.

If you want something you can always beat and don't have to be good to get very far, get a Galaga. I suck at the game (because I don't like it and rarely play it) and can get to level 20 with no problem.

Galaxian may seem slower, but it is much harder to excel at. the one-shot-on-the-screen-at-a-time makes you develop some decent skills to get very far thru the game. No more destroy-them-all-as-they-come-in lameness....

BTW - if you want a REALLY fun game that takes most of what you like about Galaga, has better music, and can be had in the price range you want - get a Gyruss....

Galaxian can't hold a candle to Galaga's game play. It's like comparing Pac Man (Galaxian) to Ms. Pac Man (Galaga).
