Always wanted a Galaga, and may be picking one up soon. Only problem is, it has a Gaplus boardset and marquee installed. (Well, that and it needs a new CPO.)

Honestly, I've never played Gaplus, and unless it's really badass, it's unlikely I'll be leaving it as-is if I buy the machine.

Which is the better game...and why?

By the way, what kind of cost would I be looking at for a repro CPO, Galaga marquee, and Galaga PCB?

I had both in my collection back in the days and I loved Galaga and Galaga 88 way better then Gaplus/Galaga 3. It was very similar to the original Galaga up to level 4 then the you go backwards or down while shooting. Its a way different way to play and some ppl really enjoy but I did not at all. I would say the bordset is around $125 or higher, the marquee between $10-$60 (all depending upon condition) and the cpo I paid $110 for a great condition one. Anyways good luck.

Toss in a multigame board that plays both, and other games. It's less than the cost of the Galaga board.

Nah, I'd want the real deal in there.

Besides, I already feel guilty enough for currently having a multi board in my Pac cab. (Although, getting to play Jr. Pac goes a long way in helping me cope with my guilt.)

;)

If you give it a honest chance, I think you will find Gaplus is every bit as good as Galaga.

mame doesn't do it Justice . The video emulation is off , it says so at the boot up screen .

I have Gaplus and like it much better than Galaga . If you suck at video games you'll probably like Galaga better cause its easier .

But I actually like Galaxian better than all of them and I am currently selling my Gaplus CT so I can buy a Galaxian .

Your just gonna have to play it to see if you like it .

But if the cab is a Galaga , then I'd restore it back no matter what . The wiring is the similar for both games but Gaplus uses a 8 way stick .

Amen, brother! Gaplus does get rather tough, rather quickly. Your not stuck on the bottom like the other Galagas. I think the biggest selling point is how you can grab almost all the alien ships and use them....bonus stages are fun too.

Speaking as a guy that owns both games, and have both sitting side by side I can say that Gaplus/Galaga 3 kicks Galaga's ass all over the solar system. It is more challanging, faster, and more manic all the way around. Its a heck of a game. And I am not even using the up and down with the joystick. Just left it a left and right galaga stick. The boards are interchangable with the exception of Galaga using the 2 way stick and Gaplus using the 4 way. Anyways, like it has already been said, if you are a good gamer and give Gaplus a chance, its better. If you want the easier game, that has the real "classic" status, go for a galaga. But hey, if you want to get rid of that Gaplus board cheap pm me a message. I have 2 galaga 3 boards but I would like to have the Gaplus board to go with the marquee. That and the fact that the Gaplus board gives you the secret tripple fire ship easier than the Galaga 3 board does. And believe me when I say tripple fire=kick ass.

Hey dude check KLOV , Gaplus uses an 8-way joystick . http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7911

Playing it with only a 2-way stick must be soooo hard ! Its hard with an 8-way .

Believe it or not, I find it easier than the dedicated cabs I have played at auction. You have to remember which side to go to on the back peddling stages, but other than that, its not so bad. I routinely put up scores of 250K+ when playing. I'm sure that's no where near a record, but you don't have to break a record on that game to have fun. But I still say, a heck of a game. I don't think you will be rolling anything over on Gaplus like players can do on Galaga at any rate.

I have a spare Galaga CPO Midway version repro that I'll let you have cheap. The guy I bought it from screwed me by folding it sharply into thirds and stuffing it in an envelop to ship. I've since found an NOS CPO for my resto, so if you don't mind having to iron it out somehow, it's yours for 15 shipped. Besides the folds it's in clean brand new condition.

Gaplus seems like the low point in the whole series to me, but tgn I didn't play it when I was a kid.

As an aside, the audio in Galaga 88 is one of my favories!

I'd be all over having Galaga '88.

Is that a fairly rare boardset? Don't recall ever coming across them much in my eBay/Craigslist browse-sessions over the years.

I prefer Gaplus too (helps that I have my own :) )
Also, to endrien, Gaplus isn't a copy of Galaga 3, Galaga 3 was a ROM change to change the name in the game from Gaplus to Galaga 3. Other than that, I don't think there's any difference. Gaplus came first though. The artwork on the Gaplus marquee is sweet, much better than Galaga 3, which is just basically similar to Galaga, except with a 3 on it.
