In an effort not to re-invent the wheel....

Does anyone have a parts list (and maybe a tutorial) of what is needed to convert a original Galaga to a 60 in 1 multicade? This Galaga has already been converted to a switching power supply.

And please, before any purists launch on me, this is a well beaten Galaga and the original boards have went bad... so this may be the time to make the change.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Don't forget you need to punch a few holes in the control panel for the other buttons.

You really only need one more hole. Theres only one game that uses a 3rd button, Breakout, and thats just to select the 3rd level.

Youll also need to put a 4-way joystick in there and expand the hole for it.

The arcade shop JAMMA adaptor has pin locations to wire a new CP right into. It's what I did for my mappy. It's not hard to figure out. I retained my original Mappy Harness fine. I even used the original Mappy PS with no issues.

4 wires for joystick, 4 more for buttons and 1 ground, all wired from the Galaga/Mappy to JAMMA adapter straight to the CP Controls. I worked backwards from the JAMMA mapping and soldered into these pre-drilled little holes on the adapter.

Since the Mappy and Galaga are pretty interchangable, it's basically exactly what i did. I did install a Galaga CP and overlay mainly cause I wanted an adjusted Joystick position vs the centered Mappy one.

I used a Sanwa JLF set to 4 way. It bolted straight in with the wider Sanwa mounting plate and the joystick movement is so small that it still cleared in the Galaga 2-way slot.

Let me know if any of this is unclear.

I would personally gut the cabinet wiring and all. Get a new switching power supply, jamma harness and just buy a multi CP from arcadeshop.

Buy 2" trackball
Buy the trackball harness from Bob Roberts.

All listed items are cheap. Go brand new and never look back.

I totally agree. You can leave the original CP intact and make the game
much more enjoyable with a trackball and the buttons needed.

Also, I am on the fence concerning the jamma adaptor, or jamma wiring. If you jamma wire it, same the original wiring in case you change your mind.

.

Don't forget about Gunsmoke. While you can change the setting to play it with one button, it sucks to play it that way....

Thanks! That pic was just what I have been wresting with on my Galaga to 48n1 conversion. I have been trying to decide which side of the original fire button to put the new hole.

I have a set of metal hole punches from HongKongFooie tools so I was planning on punching out the joystick hole and one more button. But I have been waffling on which side of the fire button to put it on.

Now if the temps would go down so I can work in the garage...

One other question, did you use a 4 or 8 way joystick. The docs with the 48n1 don't really say which it should be.

Thanks.

Half the games use 4-way, and half use 8-way. While there are switchable joysticks out there, I always put in a 4-way, because the classic games that are played the mosts (Pac's, Frogger, etc) suck with an 8-way...

I used a Sanwa set to 4 way mode. 8 way for Pac-man/DK is total ass. It's meant to be a 4 way machine in my mind. Only a handful of games on a 48:1 are 8 way and they actually really don't belong on the board. This is why I got away with even just the 39:1.

2" spacing but still maybe too close to the Fire Arrow. I would have given it another 1/4" if I could do it over.

Gunsmoke belongs with like Mercs and other 8 way games, not DK and the golden age Vert shooters.

Buttons

Use your player 1 and player 2 buttons for the 2nd and 3rd buttons. That way you dont have to put anymore holes in the cp.
