I have a chance to pickup a descent Galaga for $175,it powers up and everything but he says it says game over and when you try to give it credits nothing happens. Is this a simple fix, in other words should I go for it cause it seems like a good price. I am just curious what I may be getting into on this repair. thanks

Galaga boards can be a bitch to work on for a number of reasons- 3 processors (but only the 1st one is in self test), chip leg rot, flaky RAM, custom chips, etc.

With that said, there is a custom chip at location 4H which is a 54xx (xx denotes date code) so you'll find them as 5456, 5453, etc just remember it's the first two digits that are important on Namco custom chips. You might get lucky replacing that one chip and your credit input problem is solved. It could also be more nefarious like a resistor pack, or deeper board issue.

Get the game, you'll learn something fixing it and you'll love playing it.

Thanks for the tips...when I got there it has some hacked wiring and the power cord was so junk it could not even be plugged in. I offered $100 to haul it as is my own risk and a deal was struck. It will either be a great deal or a bit of a money pit:) I don't care I love the game and want to restore it and play the shit out of it..here is my bargain today what do you think??

Nice deal, was originally a Galaxian, and the bezel is on upside down but great score

I would replace the cord, and plug it in and see what it does myself, could just be a bad coin switch if your lucky

Goodluck with it

I saw that same machine on the local Craigslist, I think it's a Galaxian painted black with a Galaga marquee and overlay. Weird conversion since not much is the same harness-wise.

The joystick is still a Galaxian as is the bezel. What do the boards look like inside?
