I powered up a Galaga last night and ran into an odd problem (which I haven't troubleshot yet). I thought someone here might have a quick answer. The game powers up and plays normally with correct sounds until....

When the first ship is destroyed, there is no "boom" sound. Instead there is the sound of an extra ship award (maybe the coin drop sound I am not sure which). That sound continues to loop over and over and is the only sound present. The game continues to play normally and ends and you can start a new one but that sound does not change until power is removed.

Any ideas?

post a pic of the board set. They usually have crappy sockets and resistor packs. Most try to remove and clean the legs on the chips and re install.

Once the sound is looping there is something locking up and will just keep going until power off.

and yes check your voltages at the chips.

Yeah... I haven't cleaned up the chips yet. I was just thinking and I don't remember hearing a couple of the other sounds and or music. I have a spare boardset to test and swap parts with so I should be able to narrow it down pretty quick. I just thought this might be a commonly addressed issue... of course if it was Google should have picked up on it....

GO SLOW.... AND BE CAREFUL!

Galaga chip legs are made out of egg shells!

yeaha,

I have have some bent pins on leg from swapping them around and I don't recommend that unless you are testing chip in known good board.

Other than power supply, the first place to start is the crappy sockets and resistor pack and there is a "renew kit" just for that board set. It is about $20.

+1 I was working on a Galaga last night and had to solder a new leg onto one of the custom chips since it had broken off. It's a pain, since they often break off so close to the chip package.

OP, if you're reseating/replacing chips, I would start with the sound CPU at 4E, the ROM at 3E and the custom 08xx at 2E.

I might start by putting the game into test mode to see if it has and RAM or ROM errors.

Hopefully I will get a chance to dig into this weekend. All I have done to it since I got is was replace the burned edge connectors and verify voltages.... then I ran out of time.
