Converted this one from a Bosconian cabinet that had been converted to a (you guessed it) Capcom Bowling. I didn't take pics of the process (boo) but here is the finished product. I've been wanting another Galaga since I sold my cocktail. I've always preferred the upright anyway and was looking for a candidate for quite some time, while collecting parts for a couple of years. It finally all came together. Got the Phoenix CPO which is top notch. I got some inexpensive yet silkscreened sideart. I know it doesn't say Midway but it still looks sharp. The bezel was courtesy of Dave (Arcrevival) which was very cool to have that finish out the project.

This was my first restore using a paint sprayer and I'll never look back. I made a few mistakes that I had to fix but the finished product is worth it and I learned how to do it. I figured an all black cabinet like Galaga was a good starter. This one won't be leaving the collection.

Thanks, you might notice that the cab is smaller than a regular Galaga. It was a Bosconian which, I believe has a smaller cab. It has the monitor shroud cutout in the back of the cabinet for the vertical monitor. This might have been a white Galaga at one time. Not sure though. I really like the small cabinet.

Nice work Torin. The paint (and restore) looks great. I have an HVLP gun and compressor, but I've yet to use it to paint an arcade cab. I'll have to give it a try one of these days.

Thanks Dan. Yeah, I made a few mistakes with the paint gun. It can get pretty messy with the oil based satin black I used. I had to strip and re-sand one side that I screwed up by accidentally touching the paint as it was curing. I also didn't like my initial bondo results, so I had to sand down some spots and re-paint. By the end, I got the paint mixed right and the gun adjusted to the right spray and it worked nicely. The next round should go quite a bit smoother. I'm thinking of doing the Scramble restore next that Dave sold me.

Looks good - Galaga is next on my list to restore, just haven't got around to it yet. Wondering what the CFM of your compressor is, and what paint you used.

I use a siphon type HVLP gun from Harbor Freight. It is rated for lower pressure compressors. I have a small Makita "Hot Dog" compressor and run it at 40 psi which is 3.8 cfm. Works fine but I have to be patient and let the compressor recharge every once in a while. After reading the threads around here, I didn't think my compressor would handle it but a friend told me it should be fine with that gun and at 40 psi. To my surprise, he was right.

Here is my compressor:

For paint, I used Rustoleum Satin Black oil paint thinned with acetone around 15-20%. Got it at Lowe's.

Here it is:

Sanded in between coats with 500 grit paper. Did about 3 coats total. No primer on this one. It was already black and I sanded quite a lot between coats.

I soaked the gun nozzle area in mineral spirits while not using it to make sure it didn't clog.
