Here's one idea from this site:
http://www.mikesarcade.com/arcade/repairs/galaga.html

Problem: Split screen, left hand side of screen was displayed twice, with a garbled vertical line of red jumbled letters down the center (the high score display).

Solution: Cleaned dirty legs of the custom 08XX chip at 2E on the CPU board

I'm not familiar with the roles of all the custom chips on Galaga, so not sure what that one does (or how its failure could cause that display .. by your pictures I would've guessed some sort of sprite RAM corruption).

galaga problem: update

last night i cleaned all the 08xx chips, plugged it back in, same problem.
so today, i took the board back out, cleaned any chips that were at all dirty, and it's fine now! thanks for the help.

I like to see you got it running again and what you need to do.

Great job!!
