I'm currently restoring a Galaga upright cabinet and are close to starting the pait process but I'm not sure what to use and would like some opinions. The cabinets original paint seems to be some sort of gloss or high gloss black. I think it was actually clear coated over the black but I could be wrong. Should I spray the cabinet black using spray cans and then apply a lacquer over it or use a foam roller with some black gloss paint? I am leaning towards using the spray cans but don't know how good it would come out.

What do you guys suggest? I don't have access to a professional sprayer so please don't suggest that.

Thanks in advance.

I'm doing the same thing with my galaga, though I'll be using my HVLP gun.

I'm going with Rustoleum Painters Touch, semi-gloss black. You should be able to buy it in quarts or rattle cans depending on which way you wanna go. Might be available larger than a quart as well, I didn't really look.

Rustoleum satin black is a good match. I'm not sure if you will get a good coat using spray cans. I haven't done that so maybe you will, but seems a bit tricky.

DO NOT use the spray cans. It is a waste of time and will look like crap. The issue is the swath that the spray cans sprays is not thick enough. The end result is that it looks splotchy, terrible, and requires a crap ton of paint cans @ $5 a piece. I would either A) roll it out, or B) spray it with an HVLP gun (best option but some don't have access to a sprayer).

That's what I'm afraid of but using the foam roller I know it will leave that stupid texture behind which I don't mind on some cabs if I'm trying to replicate the vinyl look but on the galaga, I would like it to be smooth.

So satin black or semi gloss seem to be the choices. That rules out out gloss black.

What about this gadget:

I suppose for $8 I can always try it.

Won't fix your issue. I've used one. It helps keep the hands from getting sore, but the end result is still the same. The nozzle of the can is too narrow to cover adequately and have the needed overlap to not cause striping or splotches.

Though I know it is daunting, I would consider renting an HVLP setup. You can buy the cheap ones from Harbor Freight but they generally don't come with a tip size big enough to spray latex. I was completely intimidated by HVLP before I used one, but they really aren't that complicated. All the best.

I appreciate the honesty.

Looks like one of my customers ( kitchen manufacturer) offered to paint it using his professional sprayer and booth which was too hard to pass up so looks like it will professionally painted after all :)

Just gotta make sure my prep work is top notch.

Thanks for all the help guys.
