Galaga or should I say Gallag. Wtf? Oh well new game

Yesterday I went and looked at a Galaga machine and the guy told me the previous owner had replaced the board. This was obvious because of the jamma adapter and the fact the board didn't fit in the original board holder. After some serious haggling I purchased the game for $250 knowing the game would not accept credits (ie couldn't play it).

I fixed it this morning. All that was wrong was the ground wire for coin switches came disconnected)

This was the problem. One of the orange wires was disconnected on the right switch. That wire is the positive wire for both coin switches so neither had power going to them. nice :)

I hate when people paint over the side art. The vinyl's are there just painted black. I actually tried removing the black paint but it did not work, I pretty much sanded through the colored ink on the white vinyl as well. Oh well new side art in the future. (on the pic on the right, I masked off the vinyl so I wouldn't sand any of the black paint that I wanted to keep)

So hooray, working galaga, or should I say Gallag?

So about these Jamma Galaga Boards... Is there any documentation on this?

Like dip switch settings perhaps? I've tried messing around with them and in some combinations the game doesn't even work! I have searched this forum, google, and any other source I could think and I havn't found anything.

Now I'm pretty sure mine is the one that was made back in 2002 (or somewhere around there)

I just want to know how to change game settings. Also is it for sure that "Free Play" does not work on these boards? I've heard that mentioned.

Also one other question; does anyone know if the easter egg "no more bad guy's shooting at you" works on these boards. I tried it but I couldn't get it to work; maybe I was doing something wrong. Just curious.

Yeah, it's always nice when someone paints right over the entire coin door, chrome and all!

You couldn't use Citristrip or Goof Off to wipe the black paint off the vinyl sideart?

You should just throw that game in the TRASH. lol I think you got a good buy Nick.

Good luck finding an original board if you wanted one. How are the residence taking to another purchase?

Thanks ricky, yea I'm taking this to the curb now, lol.

Goof off didn't cut well enough when I was stripping my ms pacman so I didn't think it would work here. I didn't try it though :-(. I just figured anything that was strong enough to remove the paint would probably damage the side art as well, including sandpaper lol.

Oh well: http://allcoinop.com/product_info.php?products_id=110 $65+shipping for new side art isn't too bad.

I picked the game up in Orlando Florida. I bought it from a guy who had it in his automobile shop. I think they repaired big rigs. It was sitting in a corner under a huge layer of dust. Everything looked good but it just wouldn't take credits. He wanted $350 for it but I told him it had a non original board, plus because I couldn't play it I didn't know if the sound worked. Plus I didn't know anything about the Jamma board and didn't know where to get schematics etc. etc. etc.

Anyway I acted as though I was going to take my dolly, my van, and leave, when he told me he'd take $100 more dollars off cause he just wants it gone. SOLD!

This morning I went through the game, found the bad wire, fixed it!

Why dont these games have free play mode?! Oh well, someone already installed an override credit button on the front.

Actually the the thing that impressed me the most was that it has the original back door and keys to the lock! I don't know about you but in the majority of my dealings, the back door is either not there or it is some piece of plywood. The only other game I've seen that had the original back door and original locks with 2 keys was TheRicksters battlezone.

Oh and my roommates were not thrilled about another game until I told them it was Galaga. My roommate Joe, his main exposure to the machine was actually the movie War Games. It looks good next to the Ms. Pacman.

Kewl, I seen a cab damn near identical in Eastgate area 2 years ago. I guess that painting over everything is very common, lol. Gratz on your Galaga :)

Just plan on replacing the sideart. The repro stuff, likely with Namco on it, but I doubt you'll mind, isn't all that expensive.

If its an original midway board the non firing trick will work just have to be patient no pun intended. not sure about bootleg boards.

Just a question for clarification.... Is the boardset JAMMA or is it using a JAMMA adaptor (IE. the wiring harness is JAMMA)? I'm asking since I thought "Gallag" only refered to the original bootleg from shortly after Galaga was released, and not the later JAMMA based bootlegs. I have worked on several Gallag boardsets and find they are more solid than the Midway Galaga PCBs, plus can be converted to show the 100% Galaga colors, logos and verbiage. I haven't ever worked with any of the newer JAMMA Galaga bootleg boards.

Oh, forgot to mention, if it's running original Namco code, the crashing bug is probably still there. I documented this many years ago on KLOV and still use it to this day to reset Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga reunion games in the field. :) It's a great way to tell if a bootleg PCB is in an original cabinet, as I used to see at auction.

BUG: A bug exists in Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga (Namco Galaga, some Midway Galaga, Gallag bootleg and Nebulous Bee bootleg) - Class of '81 that allows a player to play during the Galaga demo screen and even reset the game. The demos are the same for both Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga - Class of '81, and the bug works the same way, but the result is a little different between the two Galagas.

During the Galaga demo, the Galaga character comes down and tries to tractor-beam up the player's ship. As soon as that tractor-beam starts, the player can take control of the ship in the demo. The player has two choices here and this will effect how the game handles this bug:

* If the player allows himself to be captured, the demo will continue as normal and
he has the option of controlling the player ship or not. The player can choose
whether to save the captured ship, try to complete the level, etc. The demo mode
will complete after 30 seconds and the high-score screen will appear.
* If the player takes control of the ship and destroys the Galaga with the tractor
beam, he will be able to continue playing until the "normal" demo would have
completed. At this point the game will do one of two things depending on whether
the person is playing an original Galaga or Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga - Class of '81:

o Galaga: Some of the characters on the screen will freeze while others are still
moving and doing what they are suppose to be doing. This will last 15-20
seconds, then the game will go to the high score screen.
o Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga - The game will make a loud buzz sound, blank the screen
and then show a diagnostics screen with the version number of the games, a
RAM and ROM test, etc. This screen will stay for approximately ten seconds
before returning to the high score screen. If someone needs to know the
version of software on their boardset, this can be a handy way of finding out
without opening the cabinet.

To answer a couple of questions:

Yes the "no firing bad guy's" easter egg works

The attract mode bug does NOT work (no playing the game in attract mode an crashing)

The game says GALLAG and has 1982 on it

The board looks pretty new however I cant really place an age. It is an oversized duel boardset that is green. (i've heard some are blue?)

The wiring harness and everything in the game is all original. There is an adapter that the original wiring harness plugs into. This particular adapter says "GAL-JAM" on it. Then there is a large blue Jamma connector on the other end of the board that plugs into the much larger pin out of the game PCB.

There is also a very new HappControls power supply in the game in addition to the original power supply. Both are hooked up to different things. Not sure what yet. Didn't really look into it.

Also in response to the MAME; I had a "Dream arcade" before and thought it would be great cause I could play galaga. I couldn't do it. It just didn't work for me. It just wasn't the same. I dont even like the reunion games because the resolution always seems off; like they just extended the video signal out to the larger monitor so it always looks blurry. That and I dont like the joystick being in the center of the console.

Anyone have any idea what the purpose of "Automatic Rack Advance" is? On both Galaga and Gallag it means turning on dipswitch 6 on the second set of dip switches.

I turned it on and the game just began advancing through the levels on the screen. It would just say, "Stage 1," then "Stage 2," "Challenging Stage," etc...

Can you stop and play or what? Just wondering. Thanks!

Also not really sure what "Freeze Video" does either. For me it never went into the game it just stayed on the scrambled video that happens immediately after turning the game on.
