The Galaga I picked up today isnt making any sounds, so I assumed the boardset had issues. I swapped out boardsets with my other Galaga and much to my surprise, I still had no sound! I plugged the boardset I believed to be bad into my working cabinet and it seems the board is indeed bad as I still have issues with sound, but the good boardset still wont produce any sound in the new cabinet. I checked connections and continuity and verified the speaker is good. Hmph.....What am I missing?

check to see what voltages you're getting out of your power supply in the new Galaga... your 12 might be dead. Maybe it failed catastrophically and zapped your audio amp in the old board too.

Check the edge connector too, make sure it's not around the wrong way.

+1

If you coin up and don't hear any sound and the controls are not working then you might have a backwards connector but if the joy stick and fire buttons work then the connector is in correctly.

At least with this board set, if you get the connector wrong it won't hurt anything.

Yep, my +12 is donezo. I dont want to hack in a switcher, I want to use the original power supply. What do I need to replace?

Oh, and a side question... Would a missing +12v cause dead coin door lights as well?

I think I may still have a complete power brick and Midway power supply board for Galaga out in my shop.

So I spliced in a switcher today and I was so ready to hear sounds, but then I got the dreaded RAM 2L error. FML.

Can I commission anybody to repair two Galaga boardsets?

I'm not taking on any Galaga boardsets until end of next month and already have 2 of those and 1 Bosconian in the wings for then.

Alright, well maybe you can help me. Truth is I have seen my machine throw up 2L or 2H before, but resetting the machine usually fixed it, at least up until now. Which of the custom chips does the RAM communicate through? If these are anything like one of the Dig Dug boards I fixed, its a bad socket somewhere I presume.

08xx

But could also be caused by a problem with the 06xx socket or the ROMs, or the CPU - anything on the data bus.

It turns out that +5 isn't enough for Galaga. Turning up the power supply yields a fully working machine. Granted I still need to power cycle the machine a couple times but I'd rather do that then blow out the boardset with too much voltage. Oh, and for future reference, the coin door lights have a fuse on the bottom of the cabinet. Replacing that obviously fixed that issue as well.

And you can solder some extra ground wires from the top to bottom boards.

The 2nd revision of the boardset has those.
