I was given a pretty junky Galaga cab today, and, when I got it home, I realized that there was not a pcb to be found inside.

I have the rapid fire board, surprisingly, but that's it.

Still has the original power supply and IT.

I have the manual, and I'm seeing that I need the video board and the CPU board, but, in the pictures I keep seeing, there appears to be a smaller board behind the other two.

What am I missing? Any suggestions or replacement parts? Should I go with a switching power supply? What does one do with the IT when you make the change to a switching power supply?

I'm still very new to this, and this is my first cabinet. I'll be restoring the cabinet body, first, and then I'll worry about the electronics.

You need to make sure the controls and wiring harness is there... the power supply board... and the 2-board set (CPU & Video) that makes up the game.

There should be an isolation and power supply transformer in the bottom of the cab and of course, a monitor and marquee light too.

There is a filter board but it isn't needed. Test the power supply and just get a board set. If you want to go to a switcher it is pretty basic. Orange is 12v red is 5v and black is ground. Most of white is ground too but there might be a -5 in there, it doesn't seem to be needed. Everything from the transformers to the old ps should be disconnected and run AC from the isolation transformer. At least that is what I found when working on one with the switcher. Of course reference the schematics when hooking it up. If I were to convert one I'd make a harness for the switcher so I could just plug the existing wiring in so no hacking.

It's got the isolation transformer (IT) and original power supply, rapid fire board, wiring harness, monitor and marquee and marquee light, and I'm restoring a Galaga control panel, as well. Received new CPO yesterday, and have reworked that wiring.

I'll take pictures of what's there ASAP and see if that'll be more help evaluating. I unloaded it last night, and didn't have a chance to take pictures.

I appreciate the help, everyone!

Here's some pictures. Excuse the quality. My camera cable appears to be M.I.A., so I had to use my phone.

Here's the patient.

If I go with a switching power supply, will I need a replacement power supply board?

That was what I thought. I still haven't gone over the wiring schematics with a fine-tooth comb.

I suppose I'll still have to use the isolation transformer, though, as it's still the original monitor from '81.

yes isolation transformer has to be used

Thank you very much for the advice!

I'm making my own wiring schematic for when I put this puppy back together.

It'll take a good deal of elbow grease before that happens, however.

Check out this thread. There is a pic of the connector I tested these boards with and a switcher supply. I think it is post 16.
