I really liked this game. I only played the demo but I am already planning to buy it. Anybody else try this out??? If so, what do you think of it???

So I did end up buying it and I rock at this game. I have been playing everyday since they are opening the Tournament Level BETA on the 20th...The BETA only lasts until the 24th...I guess that is when the real tourney begins. I can't wait.

I am certainly not the best player but I am currently ranked 850 out of 24,000 players on the PS3 and my rank is rising everyday.

Details on the tourney...

I know that no one cares but that doesn't bother me. Last night I was ranked at 750 and I am hoping to be in the high 600's today. Two days until tourney BETA stage. I can't wait.

I've never heard of this game.... Sounds interesting though, I love Galaga.

EDIT:

Okay so I looked at a gameplay video and honestly I'm a bit disappointed.... it looks like they simply changed too much of it, it doesn't feel like Galaga anymore.

I think you are looking at it the wrong way. Galaxian was the original. Then there's Galaga. The third is Gaplus and the fourth is Galaga '88. I believe Galaga Legions DX adds to what Gaplus was and is not intended to be a simple Galaga port. They went with the 8 way directional joystick instead of the original two way at the bottom of the screen. Then they made it so the baddies come from all directions instead of just the sides going up into formation and then down.

Just like they did with Pac-Man Championship Edition DX. They took the basic Pac-Man style but used the Ms. Pac-Man (no patterns for the ghosts) and added a twist by giving you different game modes and a time limit. This means that you have to be able to play the game really well for the short amount of time they've given you.

Both of these games took the beloved original arcade themes and have adapted them for today's gaming population allowing them to experience the classics in a new way for the first time. I think they were very well made (although I do believe that Galaga Legions DX is a lot shorter since it doesn't have as many gameplay modes) and the updated graphics are amazing. My wife is not a SHMUP fan but she is addictd to the Pac-an Championship Edition DX.

Download the demo and don't base your judgement from the gameplay videos.

Also, just to brag and update, my rank is now 630 out of 24,500 ranked players.

Well I never really liked Gaplus, so maybe that's the reason. I always felt that the standard Galaga (and '88) were the best and I have the fondest memories of those.

Ah well. Anyway, good luck in your tourney tomorrow! :D

I think that the look is why I don't care for it. It lost that cartoon look to the alien bug ships. The game play changed so much that it is hardly Galaga anymore. They should have named it something else. It is more of a bullet hell game than a traditional shooter. Also I can't stand how every ship glows. Oh and you left off Namco Collection Vol 1. in your list of Galaga games. It has Galaga Arrangement in it, which is pretty good, although not as good as Galaga '88.

If I were to put the series in order of goodness it would be this:

  1. Galaga
  2. Galaga '88
  3. Gaplus (so damn hard though)
  4. Galaxian (I hate to put the original so low)
  5. Galaga Arrangement (only because it didn't change much from '88, 2 player simutaneous is cool)
  6. Galaga Legions DX
  7. Galaga Legions

You can change the visuals on it to 7 different types, including the original bug ships. However, I can see everyone's point on the gameplay.

Oh yeah, now my ranking is 601.

The night before the BETA Tourney and I am ranked at 484. Moved up almost 400 places in three days...not bad in my book.

This BETA Tourney is freakin hard. You start with 3 ships to play and finish the Tournament Stage. There are no bonus ships awarded at set point increments like the standard stages. I still have yet to finish the stage and I've played like 20 times. High score so far is 3.5 mil. The most nerve racking thing is there is no leaderboards for the Tourney. You just play, your score is submitted, and they will post player ranks and scores after it is all over. Makes me want to pull my hair out. I can get to the fifth (final) section but I always die during it. This last time I had 1 minute and 23 seconds left to go and I died. I needed to take a break before I go for it again...that's what this post is.

I'm going to have to reduce the difficulty down to easy (speed is set at 70 to start) just so I can at least finish the stage and then resume at hard difficulty (speed is set at 90 to start) after I can at least get one run on the books. The difficulty doesn't change the gameplay just the starting speed. The faster the speed, the more bad guys you can get through in the limited time.

I've played in a few tourneys in my day and usually my strategy was to practice at a higher difficulty/speed then what would be in the actual competition -- like a baseball player swinging three bats at once before he steps up to the box.

Anyway, I saw you on PSN playing the game so I just let you alone. ;)

Yeah, I had been practicing at the highest difficulty. I'm n the top 5% in 7 out of ten levels.

However, I did finish the new Tourney level on easy difficulty scoring 4.6 mil. I was 49 seconds from completing it on Hard and lost my last life. I've got three more days so I'll definitely get it done. I'll take a picture of my highest completed stage score.

I didn't do very well in the tourney. I never got a chance to play the last two days due to bad days. However, I don't think I did too bad for my first tourney and I think I just unlocked the secrets to Galaga Legions DX today. Here is a pic of my rank from the tourney...

Currently, overall in the scoreboards I am at around 320 out of 25,000+ players. I am gunning for being in the top 100. If I can get there then I will be happy. All of the top 100 players get their gameplay video replay backed up on the leaderboards for others to see their skills. All this stuff really makes me wish I had any of the Galaga arcade games real bad!!!
