So I bought a $200 Galaga, owner told me "Motherboard is bad, and video is gone". Side art, CPO and marquee were all in excellent shape, so I thoght WTF, I'll get it. Brought it home. adjusted H-hold and another couple of pots and woo-hoo, I can play Galaga.

First thing I notice is that once the enemies settle at the top, there is a mirror image of them midway on the screen. Then ,after stage 7, no enemies come down. Hmmm, weird. Turn it off and on again, play for another while, next time I have like 50,000 after level 1. Then my score shows as 15S2K51, while the high score shows as 125, 18somethingsomething. I stop playing, and then the high score is KS52K51.

So, board problem I'm guessing.

Any way to troubleshoot this? The board is def. a bootleg (2 boards), and I know squat about boards.

Any help is appreciated.

Your normal galaga board is a two board system, Which typically have bad resister pack and bad sockets. It also have brittle IC legs which can break even if you are careful.

If you don't know nothing about boards. You might consider sending it out to get repaired

Well the reason I think it's a bootleg board is because in the backdoor is a pile of printed emails saying "I just discovered another ancient bootleg today, here is the dip switches for the first 3 rows, but email me if you know the rest of them ..." blah blah blah. Also, an email printout of the pinout, as well as hand printed schematics.

Sending stuff out from Canada (and back) is quite expensive. I do have a Galaga tabletop, which I guess I could transplant to the UR I bought. It might actaually be cheaper to buy a working board from FeeBay?

Here is what a 2 board system looks like. In it's card cage.

Or find someone who lives in canada who has a working galaga board

Since it's not a galaga board it should not have the same weak chip legs problem.
Try removing the board when the machine is unplug.
Put it on a magazine or a pile of new papers.
Press down on the socketed chips firmly.
You might hear a Little crunching noise that is normal.
Your attempting to reseat the chips to break any oxidation that might happen between the chip and the chip socket.

Don't for get to label where everything goes.. take a Picture or a movie so you can remember how to put it back together.
