I fully plan to send my board off to be rebuilt someday soon, but in the meantime, the one I am using in the machine has become unstable! When I first start it, the graphics look like wet paint running top to bottom on the screen. After a couple of minutes it works just great. Any ideas as to what would cause this?

More than likely bad sockets. My Galaga doesnt boot unless I turn it on and off and smack the sides a few times. I need to go in and replace the sockets on mine.

Post a pic...

I've seen issues that sound like what you are describing caused by a bad LS368 at 3N on the video board or by bad resistor packs... bad RAM... bad sockets... or a bad LS298 at 5B on the video board.

The wet paint effect can be caused by a a bad video ground connection between the PCB and the monitor.

I had this same issues a few days ago. What I did was reseat all the removable chips on the 2 boards, and cleaning the pins with a brass wire brush. While cleaning I found a chip with a broken pin, and one with a weak, ready to break pin. I replaced the 2 chips, and all is great. I'm sure it was the dirty pin to socket issue.

A scotch brite pad will work too..

I was kinda thinking that. I'll give it a shot when I have some time!

Be very careful with scotch brite pads. The way those pads are made, one wrong move and it will snag a leg and rip it straight off. Ask me how I know.....
