I've done much reading and research before creating an account here and I appreciate any help or repair suggestions. The sound effects are garbled with the exception of the "Boom" when the players ship is hit. I've successfully replaced the resistor pack at RM2 (as noted on mikes arcade repair logs) with no success. I have also successfully installed a full Galaga Cap kit purchased from Arcade Shop. Still No joy. I have checked the voltage at the board and have it set to 5.3 volts this small adjustment came as suggested by Classic Arcade Repairs Youtube video. To that point, I have tried adjusting the voltage down and up to see if this helped but it did not. I have checked the speaker and even hooked up a new speaker with no success. While I was confirming the cap kit installation, I noticed a Prom a (5080) at 1C (Video Side) was much hotter to the touch than all the others. But as I understand it 99% of the sounds are generated on the CPU. I researched the Prom's duty and one site states this prom is the sound sequencer. Running the game without this prom causes the game to play almost invisible with only the starfield and the scores visible. So this prom is likely working ok (perhaps) and I could be wrong about defining it as the "sound sequencer"? --It felt like a good lead given Im having sound problems but Im not sure now.
I also watched this issue be fixed by replacing the GG-2 prom( I believe is located at 5C) which an identical variant can be found on bosconian and digdug boards. I currently have no "good" source for this prom though I would love to give that a shot!
The game otherwise plays ok but I have noticed on occasion a ship will be missing from the bugs beginning sequence where they s fly in a rotating line formation. Every now and then 1 ship will be missing with no one ship consistently being missing. I.E once it was a missing Galaga ship and other time it was a missing red moth. I suspect this could be caused by the ill advised practice of running the game without fully securing the boards so they don't touch the metal shroud? But it could also be a secondary symptom of my audio issues ...possibly.
About Me? I currently hold the # 3 1 ship Galaga score in the world with 3.4 million. Galaga became a very important part of my life in my late 40's believe it or not. Before this I would regularly play 6-10 hours a week and my average score on one ship is 2 million. I have greater goals and love this game not only for its competitive side but I also find it very theraputic to get my mind off things.
I have no experience in PCB repair but Im keen to learn and consider myself above average intelligence with some average soldering skills and equipment.
Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions, or advice.
