Galaga Garbled Sounds -Boom Sounds OK

I wish Mark would stick to being helpful and not nasty towards us. It's so strange to me that someone so damn smart can be so stupid at the same time.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't defend himself when someone shits on him, but it's usually him doing the shitting first.

...yet you come in and post nothing about the problem in question, and only attack me.
Buy a fucking mirror.

you don't ever really offer up any solutions either. lol

some of us work in the real world. you know, actually fixing games. not calling people fucking idiots because they don't know the mating calls of data bits. you're still an intelligent fella, just a little too Sheldon for most people's liking. have a great day

Read what I posted Mark. I asked the OP to DM me and also said that replacing that PROM has fixed other boards in the past for me.

You're an angry man. Get some therapy.

Well for now I've thrown in the towel. Of course b/c my issues arent resolved but motivated b/c I love to play at least a few hours a week and dislike the inactivity. Probably a major oversight on my part blindly believing I could put 100's if not 1000's of hours on that board and expect it to keep going ...given its age. Cab was kept inside in air conditioned enviroment and I tried to be gentle, but I never seriously considered the effects of time and use . So a new board is on the way. Provided this board is reliable. I'll send the broken out for service. I regret that my over confidence believing I could fix it myself came off as arrogant. I developed this opinion by viewing this specific problem being fixed on one of the dozens of repair videos I saw online. And while I do still believe this could end up the issue, I do admit I lack the expertise to prove it. I foolishly thought I could just track down that chip and give it my best educated guess thereby taking a short cut. But Im no better off than where I started going this direction so a different path forward is needed. this was a needed wake up call if I want to keep playing at this rate. So I'll likely purchase a bit kit which will absorb the majority of my playing time and I'll hold my good board in reserve and only use it for record attempts or special occasions. Thanks for those who chimed in and offered suggestions. Sorry about bringing up piggy backing :) I had no idea it was so controversial. And I will remain in touch but perhaps in some of the other appropriate threads.

FYI, I dont know if the BitKit is "emulation" or not, but in my experience, ALL Namco games experience input lag on the emulation-based boards.

If you dont want to fix your board, there are plenty of people here and online elsewhere that can take on the job for you.

Bitkit is an FPGA and plays Galaga great according to some serious players and me. Adding to that, Pacman patterns work, tested by one of the latest people to get a perfect Pacman.

And this is precisely why it's a complete fucking waste of my time to provide detailed technical information on this site.

When you add to these threads, you are also helping other people in the future. Valid help is always useful.

I get it, though, Mark. I've been absent from this site for a long time.

good to know.

OP, if you go this route, get a Galaga to JAMMA adapter so you can just plug this board in. You will also be able to play a few other games that are on the BitKit. :)

@sheister I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but low voltage would also cause garbled sounds. Checking the voltage on the board could be a clue. Check the 5v cap to the left of the edge connector.

I see that you adjusted voltage, did you check voltages on chips? make sure those are also at 5v? If those are low, cold solder joints on the 3pin connector can also be a point of failure.

I'll look at that tonight. Thanks

Don't beat yourself up to bad. Galaga boards are pita to work even for the experienced repair guys.

In the process of ordering a replacement board. I found a source for the elusive GG-2 Prom at 5c from an ebay selle Im sure you all know about at hobby roms. So I'll grab one. (unless suggested otherwise) and report back. I also have some of the ram chips at.. 1a and 1b arriving soon. I'll be swapping those in. Report back soon. Right when I was resigned to call it quits. The GG-2 Prom became available so I think its worth one more shot before sending it out.
