Hello,
I am a new member from the UK.
I will be honest from the outset, I know nothing about arcade machines and hope someone here can help me.
I have joined in order to try and get some help with a machine I have acquired.
My father recently passed away leaving me with a lot of things to sort out and sell.
One item is an old Galaga arcade machine.
He's had it for donkeys years. I remember him saying he only bought it as he loved playing it at university. Its been in a corner with a blanket over it for a long time.
I have turned it on this morning and it is fully working. I even put some money in and had a game! Didn't get far though! lol )
I understand that your forum is in the USA, but I cannot find a similar forum in the UK.
I am looking to sell this machine and wondering what the best way to sell is?
Is ebay the best?
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Stefanie x

Hey Stefanie,

Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. Sincere condolences to you.

There is an active collector scene in the UK and this is a good forum to look for some local help.

I would recommend avoiding ebay as the fees, shipping and hassle in general would likely be much more than you would want to deal with. Depending on how much time you are willing to invest in the process, I would say read through some posts on that forum (trading post section, valuations, etc.) and get a feel for what may be a reasonable price range. Then do a similar post and see what you get for a response. Most of us here are invested in the preservation of the classic games such as you have and would love to be able to "save" it so I would imagine you would not have much trouble getting a fair price. Trust your gut with whomever you correspond with of course! I don't have anyone to recommend there myself but perhaps others can chime in with recommendations.

Are you able to take any pictures of the game and post them here? It would be cool to see what the cabinet looks like, and the artwork around the screen (bezel art), sign (marquee), control panel, sides, etc. Inside of the cabinets shots are alway fun for us dorks too! Of course that is likely a pain in the arse for you but if you were so inclined, they would be appreciated.

Good luck with the game and the estate.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your help.

Here are some pictures of the machine.

Hi,

My condolences on your loss.

What you have there is not an original Galaga cabinet. That looks to be a universal/generic cabinet with a Galaga board in it. Games like these are not at all uncommon, but it does affect the value of the game, as the games that go for the higher prices are almost always in their original cabinet. On the other hand, the cabinet itself does have some value on its own, since you can take a number of game boards and plop it in that cabinet and easily have a new game. There are many who would probably be more interested in your game for the cabinet than for the actual game it plays.

Good advice was given above, to check with the UK forums to get an idea of a fair price. Most people will be fair and honest, but do remember that there will always be folks who will sense that you know little about these games and try to convince you it's nearly worthless and they'll take it off your hands for a tenner. So I'd recommend you take some time, and gather a number of opinions before you choose to sell. In the US I would think the equivalent sort of game would be in the $300-400 range.

Best of luck!

and good advice from fcjim there too. Thanks for posting the pics, Stef. Have you had any luck getting it sold?
