Thought I would throw this out there and get some info from those of you who have restored a galaga cabinet. What is the best way to restore the cabinet since it is not a painted finish but what looks like a melimean finish. Is it best to sand it down and then repaint or is there a better method? Thanks

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but Galaga cabinets were painted. I believe they used a lacquer to give it the luster/smoothness and hardness.
When I had one, I painted it with a roller and brushes because I had no sprayer. I rolled on black paint, then brushed on a clear coat and sanded it with progressively more fine grits until it was super smooth and shiny. I might have even put some wax on it. In the end, it looked very original. I put a lot of time into though, I didn't just roll on the black like some people do. I worked it until it looked factory original.
It would have probably saved me tons of time using a sprayer.

I believe some were painted, mine infact had black vinyl on it. The only thing painted was the monitor suround area, and the side lips on the kick panel area.

The back, upper and lower portions were vinyl, and the top was done in a grey shiny vinyl. The back door was painted black front and back.

I ordered alot of vinyl samples to find the right sheen of vinyl I wanted, and have a roll of it on order. Should be here tomorrow I hope. It's not to glossy and not to dull.

Well problem is you have to buy a 48" x 50yd roll of it. So.. I'm going to have enough to do at least 4 more games left over.

Why go with vinyl over new melamine and a router? Vinyl rips and tears very easily.

Semi-gloss black melamine shouldn't be tough to source.
