What does this mean and how do I fix it. The monitor has no red for about 5 minutes after turned on. Thanks!

I think this is mostly caused by a tube problem. the color guns (red, green and blue) can get dirty/weak/shorted. the best way to check this is with a monitor rejuvenator, but not everyone has one of those lying around or knows someone with one.

some people have luck taking monitors into TV repair shops and they can rejuve for free or for a fee. whichever.

others have had luck removing the monitor and laying it screen down on a cushy soft surface (cause the weight of the monitor itself can scratch the glass) and gently tap on the neck of the tube. but doing this is risky, cause you're tapping on glass! and if the neck breaks, the tube is garbage.

sometimes that can clean up a gun though. those are your options. :)

I have noticed that if I tap the machine on its side when I turn it on the red color will come back and usually stay, what does that indicate?

cold solder joint is where the solder starts cracking and doesn't make good contact or in some cases no contact at all. you can often times sniff this out by tapping on your cab and see if the picture will shake or primary colors appear/disappear. depending on the effect you see from the tapping will usually steer you in the direction of what to look for. a missing color for instance will either be in the neckboard color drive circuitry (the drive transistors, resistors) or in the video signal header itself (the R G B pins).

if you get no red until the monitor warms up then it's more than likely, as I said before, a problem with your tube. the red gun either being weak or dirty. only a monitor rejuvenator can tell.

Alrighty, so apparently I never checked the wiring from the game PCB to the monitor chassis...the video cable was loose!?!?!? I am a moron. No idea why I never checked...must have thought I did, but didn't. Anyway game works great now! Moral of the story...don't be a dumbass like myself and do some easy troubleshooting on your own before creating a bigger problem for yourself.
