Galaga 88 - Understading my First Machine

Does anyone have experience installing a second speaker and wiring stereo sound out of one of these things? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Looks like it has something to do with J105 and J106 on the game board according to this old post...

Just a reminder that the board is capable of stereo sound. There's a jumper for mono/stereo and a small header you can pull the left/right audio from. Both are located at the top corner of the board near the edge connector.

Wish I could be more helpful than that.

Thanks, maybe I should start a dedicated thread to address this issue.

Also I sent Paladin a PM

I've attached a picture of the Galaga 88 board. I have circled the two relevant sections in red.

The 3 pin jumper JP4 is labeled "MONO/STEREO". Take the jumper off the mono pins and move it over to stereo.

The 3 pin attachment for stereo is J108 and is labeled "L R", with the middle pin being ground.

Here's where it gets a bit tricky because I haven't messed with it for a while.

I read somewhere that this connector was originally supposed to be for headphones. If so it must be line level output, which means you can't just hook it straight up to a pair of speakers because it would have really low volume. When I play this game, I play it in a Japanese arcade cabinet that has an internal audio amplifier.

I THINK (in other words, I take no responsibility for you damaging the PCB) that you would need to buy a cheap audio amplifier and run the Left, Right and Ground wires to it. From the amp output, you would run your stereo speakers.

Sorry for not being clear on the final piece, I haven't been doing much of anything with my arcade for a while. Too many hobbies!!
I'm sure there are other folks here with way more knowledge about line level vs amplified audio from arcade boards.

It is a cool thing to do though, because playing the game in stereo is awesome!

I've wired in a second speaker before. I just changed the jumper and created a second connector for the additional speaker at J106. Honestly, I didn't care for it and felt it removed some of the bass. So, I ended up removing it.

Interesting, thanks for adding your experience with this. I do like the bass in this game. Sounds a great, has that Sega Genesis FM synth thing going on.

What's your high score btw? I see your avatar is a pic of the control panel, so you must like this game :)

I thought that at one point, but the cabinets keep following me home. I THINK that I'm happy with my lineup now. I guess it's time to get into pins. Ha

When my apartment situation allows for it, I would like to get a Pin..... But for now this is all I can handle or hold.

It's hard to remember since it doesn't save high scores. I would assume however many points one can get to finish the game. 😊
It's one of my favorites though.

You play on TG settings? I have yet to finish it, but haven't played much due to my new DK cabaret.

Regarding high score save, check out this thread. Mine saves high scores now. It's great.

If it removed the bass, you have a speaker hooked up backwards. They are basically canceling themselves out.

Perhaps that's why I have noticed most of my cabinets are all single speakers even though there looks to be spots for two. Interesting.
