I am new to the XY monitors and have worked on the clasic regular 19" game monitors for about a year changing caps, flybacks, and xistors. I have an asteroids deluxe game with a monitor that does not come on. I do not see any neck glow, I do hear a single kock when powering on and on when powering off and a hum when on. I can see a red led on in one of the boards. I have a cap kit with xsitors package from bob roberts but wanted to get thoughts from you as to how to proceed.

1. do I use the same process of discharging the monitor with a grounded screw driver?
2. Is there a flyback on these
3. what is the spot killer and how do I test that

please share any tutorials, thoughts on how to proceed, test, ect.
Thanks

Is this an upright, cabaret, or cocktail cabinet?

If you don't already have them, download the Asteroids Deluxe manual & schematics from
http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Atari_Kee/

and the monitor manual from
http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Monitors/

then, get the Black & White Vector Monitor FAQ and read it a couple times
http://www.ionpool.net/arcade/tech/bw_vector_monitor_faq.pdf

The overall crt discharging process is the same as a raster monitor. However, some recommend discharging through a large resistor to prevent possible monitor damage, or using a high voltage probe to discharge it.

Vector monitors don't have a "flyback"; they have a high voltage transformer.

The red led on the monitor's deflection board is the "spot killer". If it is lit up, then the monitor isn't seeing an x/y signal from the game board. While re-capping the monitor is a good idea, it is unlikely to fix your game if the spot killer is lit. (The problem then is likely in the game board or power supply.)

1. You can.
2. Yes.
3. It's the little red light on the deflection board ( little square board in the chassis), if it is on, that is bad. Asteroids Deluxe monitors are hard to work on in the game, might consider pulling it out. Cap it and replace those transistors and solder the back side of any connector pins. Test the monitor before putting it back in the game.
4. See if your game will play blind.
