So I've finally got my asteroids up and running. My monitor has a slight shake to the image. Seems to be more prevalent near the bottom.

I figure I should replace the caps regardless. But what about the two big caps on the regulator? For that matter, should I be replacing Big Blue? Other than this slight shake, everything's operating as it should.

Where is the synch wire on Asteroids? ;-) Probably not big blue. Im going to guess you have bad x-y size pots or a problem with the high voltage or diode.

The x and y pots seem to adjust the screen smoothly, so I'm guessing it's not them. Looks like it's time to pick up an HV probe.

Yeah, there is no sync on vector monitors; it's a raster-monitor thing.

I don't think a HV probe will help here. If your whole image was growing or shrinking, I might suspect varying HV.

A video would be worth much more than the single word "shakiness" in helping understand that exactly is happening, and what might be causing it.

When I said HV probe, I really meant for discharging it (since you can't just ground the anode on a G05).

Here's what the HV cage looks like. Is it missing a cover?

It's pretty hard to see on my lousy video since my phone was shaking as much as the screen. But if you look closely, you can see the copyright line jiggle in relation to the copyright sticker on the monitor. It doesn't help that the phone's persistence actually smooths the movement into a slightly fatter stroke.

Yes, you're missing the HV cage cover/grille. That may have something to do with your problem. I've never tried running one w/o the cover on, but I'd guess it's at least feasible that there might be some interference with it off.

Can't really make out the shakiness in the video. I see a blurry area, but I think that's your sticker.

You definately need a cover.I would cap it and reflow the connectors on the high voltage cage and deflection board. The large caps on the power supply are usually good.

Is the cover mesh? Solid? Mostly solid?

I'm sure I'll have to fab a replacement.
