I just bought a Funhouse in good condition. The only problem is that Rudy does not yell "ouch" when you hit him in the mouth. All other sounds, talking, and eyes work, just not the response when you hit him in the mouth with the ball. Any ideas what to troubleshoot?

Thanks

what is an opto

I am new to this. Not sure what an opto is or where it is located on rudy. I assume it is some kind of optical switch? I think the scoreboard registers rudy hits after each ball play. Is that on a different sensor switch? I would think the "ouch sound" and points register for hitting rudys mouth would be on the same sensor switch.

Get your cell phone camera out. Turn it on... you may want to lower or turn off any background lights in your room. if you see a faint purple-ish grey glow. your opto is working... clean both with windex on a q-tip. If that doesn';t work check for broken wires. If that doesn't work check for broken wires on the opto board... the list can go on and I always work backwards from the problem.

What is the purpose of the cell phone camera

What does the cell phone camera do. Can you see the opto infarred emission from the sensor through the cell phone camera display? Is the sensor just prior to rudy's mouth?

thanks

Never knew about the cell phone trick, as I always used the Radio shack test strip or an led lamp. Now I am going to try the cell phone deal.

Short and Sweet (I hope)

There is an opto board right in front of Rudy's mouth, lift the playfield and look from underneath. It is cut away for a small green PCB and on it you will find a pot with a screw for adjustment. Turn the screw about half of a turn each way until the read LED on the board comes on. Then turn it back until it JUST shuts off. It should be set, now put a pinball on top of it and the red light should come on. If you start getting "Ouch's" when the ball is not there then it is too sensitive.

I would suggest doing this in "switch edges" mode when you trip it you will hear a beep sound which helps. You need to know this because they need occasional adjustments. Good luck.

cannot find adjustment board

I checked the opto with a digital camera. It is glowing. I wiped rx and tx with windexed q-tip. No broken wires. Re-set conectors on opto board. I still get no "ouch". When I start in test mode, it says check sw 51 dummy opto.

I cannot find the adjustment board you spoke of. I found the opto board way in the back under the playfield. How do you remove it to check for broken wires. Hard to reach! I just reseated connectors.

I looked near the jaw motor gears under the playfield. No small pcb with led for opto adjustment. The opto tx & rx wires go straight to the rear opto board that has no adjustments. I was hoping for a quick fix, but I cannot find the adjustment pot.

thanks,

rick

So you're saying you checked to ensure the wires are physically soldered to the optos? If so just because the transmitter opto is working doesn't mean the receiver opto is working. Does the optos on the step ramp work? If not then your opto isolator may be defunct. Part# #5490-10892-00.
If the steps ramp optos are working then I'd personally just order a new transmitter and receiver opto and replace them both. Part #'s #A-16908 and #A-16909
