Rudy's eyelids broke on my Funhouse, so I took his face off and removed them. While I'm waiting on the replacement, I figured I'd just play with no eyelids, so I put him all together and powered it on.

But, I've run into a problem. When I start up a game, Rudy starts to talk, and as soon as he does, it triggers a 'Rudy Gulp'. It does this over and over, because he keeps trying to talk, and every time he does it triggers the gulp. I should note that this was a fully working machine previous to this - Rudy Gulp worked properly, as did all other aspects of the game.

I've checked the micro-switch and it's fine (both in-place and removed).

I've checked the wires, and don't see anywhere that it could be shorting.

So I figure it's got to be the jaw moving and actually physically activating the switch somehow, but I've watched it in action, and it doesn't seem to actually trigger the switch (I took Rudy's face off, and shined a flashlight in there to try to see what was going on).

Any ideas on what's going on here?

Thanks in advance.

Do your switch tests show that it's always active?

nope - switch test is as expected.

but i had a closer look this morning, and while the jaw isn't activating the switch mechanically, it seems to do so electrically. when rudy starts to talk i can actually see the switch close. it's like current flows to the switch and causes it to close or something. very odd.

Check your Diode.

Check your Diode.

ahh, good point. if it were bad, that would allow the current to flow the wrong way through the switch and open it (when the current is in the circuit anyway to move the jaw when he talks). will try that today or tonight.

checked the diode, and it was good.

but on closer inspection of what was happening, it looked like it was something to do with the eyelid solenoid, because the gulp problem actually depended on what he was saying, which was also related to what the eyelids were doing.

so, i put the broken eyelid back on (just the left eyelid), and started it up, and voila - worked like a charm!

so, apparently, you can't just remove rudy's eyelids entirely and still play.

Weird.
