Been looking at getting one for the fun of it.

Was also looking at the NES classic one as well. How do these play?

The good:

- Emulation is pretty much perfect.
- No input lag. (I'm not a speed runner or anything but I couldn't notice any lag as a casual player)
- Controllers are great. Feel just like originals.
- Instantly powers on.
- Support 4:3 and pixel perfect screen ratio
- Has a neat CRT filter you can turn on and off
- Supports multiple save states per game

The bad:

-
Controllers are wired and only about 3ft in length. So you either need a really long HDMI cable and set the console near you, or controller extensions, or wireless controllers. (That could introduce lag)
- There is only a fixed amount of storage space on the device with no (easy) way to upgrade it. So only a fixed amount of extra games (beyond the stock games) will fit.
- The menu system leaves a lot to be desired when you mod the console up with extra games. Only so many games will fit on the screen at any given time so you have to keep bouncing in/out of folders. The navigating between these folders can get confusing.
- There is no wifi built into this console. Might not sound like a huge deal but it really limits it's abilities for futher upgrades and easy game adding/subtracting. Plus, that means no support for Retro Achievements. That's something I'm starting to get into.

Honestly, it's a really great console for someone who wants the most absolute brainless and easiest way to get into some retro console gaming that doesn't' want to deal with carts and old consoles hooking up to new TVs. Or the complexity of setting up a raspberry pi device.

I've also wanted to build a dedicated DK '94 arcade cab and I thought this would have been a decent candidate for that but there is no way to boot directly into the game that I'm aware of.

Oh, and I moded this console a couple years ago. Lot's might have changes since I did that. Maybe the mods for it have gotten even better.

For this project (I assume you want Donkey Kong Country), I recommend getting an NSS PCB, which is wired for Jamma, plus a DogP cart converter. The kick harness covers the rest of the buttons on the SNES controller. I believe Tony Swann has the tech to get the SNES controllers working on a Jamma Cab, or you could try to source expensive/fat NSS controllers. Yes, this option is pricey...but will give you the real deal feel.

Another cheaper option is to use a JAMMA hacked SNES - user @Lemony Vengeance made me one years back and it worked amazingly well in my Capcom fighter cabinet. He used a CPS2 style kick harness connector and I got to determine the button layout (Jab-Strong-Fierce-Short-Forward-Roundhouse to A-B-X-Y-R-L, for example)

That is some really great information!

But I was actually referring to this DK '94:

That's an underrated game!
The Game Boy DK is such an amazing game. It's arguable the best game ever released on the Game Boy and that's saying a lot because the Game Boy's library is overflowing with amazing games. It's probably my favorite console of all time. (Or very close to the NES)

I'm convinced it was overlooked for so long because it came out at the end of the Game Boy's life. Everyone was obsessing over the SNES at that point and it just didn't gain any momentum.

But man...now that people are revisiting vintage games, this one is a MUST play.

I have the gameboy adapter for SNES and was buying games for it…..came across DK94 by chance, bought it and was pleasantly surprised.

While I do feel DKC is superior, this version is nice too. My comments are still valid though, a Super Game Boy adapter with a Jamma SNES will get you to realize this dream.

I no longer have my JAMMA SNES unit, sold it to a local buddy but I did find a pic I took before selling it.
