Back in the '70s, there was a popular song on the radio called "Popcorn" that was rather catchy. A bootleg version of Pengo on a blue PCB appeared that played the Popcorn tune during the game and it become the most popular version of the game. Also, the snobee's don't chase you as relentlessly so the gameplay is easier. Most people prefer this version.

An original board generally has the encrypted EPROM's and it runs on a special/custom version of the CPU. You can change the EPROM's to a decrypted version of the game if you also change the CPU to a standard one. For some reason that I am not aware of, I was not able to get a genuine Sega board to play the Popcorn version. Swapping the EPROM's from a bootleg board did not work even after switching the Sega board's CPU to a standard chip. There must be some other difference as well.

For a while, there was a Pengo High Score save module available that would play both versions. I'm not sure if it is available anymore. A few years ago, it was $45.
