FS Capcom A boards : carrier airwing, final fight, and magic sword..

I was testing a bunch of capcom A boards and a few of them did not work. I was about to think that it needed chips off the bottom B board to match, but then one of the Magic swords worked on a SFII B board..

There is a chance they are not working because they might be missing eproms.. Other than plugging them into a known good B board, I have not messed with these pcbs. I don't know, it could be a jumpers thing or something. So if someone likes to play with these, it could be a good project..

So I have not working:
pending----final fight : grey screen, looks dead
carrier air wing: plays music, but no pic
pending----magic sword: plays music, but no pic

working
sold-----Magic sword
Street fighter II WW

I also have:
NOS magic sword side art
NOS (But abused) final fight marquee

If the board plays music as soon as it's powered on then the main 68K CPU is not running. Could be a bad or missing ROM... or an A, B, or C board issue.

ok, I think I called these A boards, and that is probably wrong. I have been emailed saying they are B boards.

What I have are the top board. The ones with the mini board plugged into it. Not the bottom board that is the jamma part. So if you want to call te top half as B and c board, then thats what I have. Sorry about the confusion.

Here's my thing... other than for repair, I don't think people should be just switching those boards around, I don't think all the bottom boards are universal, and they weren't intended to be kits. If you get one up and going, sell it whole like that!

cps system II is different of course.

I would sort of agree, but both pcbs have the same style of connections. So if its bad for cps1 its equally bad for the cps2. So its matter of how careful you are about pulling the boards apart.

As for the bottom not being universal, I can not tell you yes or no. I have tried several of the SFII, magic sword and my area 88 and they all work in the SF bottom board. I have even tried area 88 and SFon the 2 sizes of the bottom board (1 bottom board is about 1" smaller).

They are almost all universal. There's a faster A board (faster CPU speed for the 68K) for at least one of the later games... and then there's the A board for the Q-Sound (CPS1.5) systems... Don't be fooled by surface mount vs. non-surface mount. They are still the same.

BUT, the CPS1.5 A boards can be swapped out with the non 1.5 type A boards if you swap the socketed PROMs. I've done it before as the only difference is that the Z80 and the rest of the sound circuitry on the A board is missing on the 1.5 version - hence the different PROM.

My Pang3 has a CPS1-Dash A board, think this is the faster one, there was a website somewhere which lists which B boards can be swapped over with which A boards. Typically I can't find it now, doh!
