Zow-Wee Bat Man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does the Joystick work without the box assembly and spring?

I have never had any problems with my other stick that is missing the box and spring. Most of the Bat sticks I have seen selling for $150+(when you find one) have also been missing these 2 parts. In most cases I have seen the spring removed from these sticks because they perform better without them. The box enclosure is to help with blocking light which is also often removed and not an issue unless you have allot of light leaking into your cabinet or play with the coindoor open.

Sheesh... I sold a complete bezerk cab with boards and bat joystick for $75. It also had the box and springs

Guess I let it go a bit cheap

Here's a bump for ya!

A CPO is available from another reputable member here in the FS section for $250(if someone needs just the CPO). This CPO is NOS and the pre-mask was removed right before these pictures.

Don't misinterpret this question, just educate me... What makes that stick itself worth $150? Does it have any special functionality, or does it work just like any other repro stick you could put in the machine?

Most Berserks, like the one I picked up, are missing it, replaced with a red ball Wico.

It is more the shape and weight of the stick than how it works that makes it rare. It was only made for this game and was quickly removed by operators and tossed away because of a high failure rate. This makes it pretty hard to find. It's an opto stick which is nothing new but it's design is specific to this model/game also. Anyone who remembers playing a Berzerk with this stick knows it is just not the same with a regular replacement.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks. One more (dumb) question... Even if it does make it more original, if you plan on playing the game for any extended period of time, why would you want to put something that expensive—with a high failure rate—back in there? For show only?

For originality I assume. Much like the stock Exidy Venture stick, the bat stick makes the game more difficult from a gameplay perspective than a ball top. The bat stick looks pretty badass, if I could, I'd have 2 panels, one for scores/playing and the other for showing off the game.

Agreed. I think if I were playing it for a long time, a replacement CP would probably go in for that very reason. If I were showing it off and it would only get small bit of playtime, I would pop the original back in for anyone that cared.

"Failure" was a poor choice of words on my part. It was more of a reliability / durability issue for the operators IMO. Under constant use on location the stick required some minor routine maintenance like cleaning the opto reflector and such. The stick was also unique and bulky so it attracted more abuse than regular ones from children and aggressive players alike. It was an early version of the "opto stick" and operators would hack in a crap stick they know they don't have to maintain rather than mess with something they might not understand. I have heard it theorized that the last several Berzerk units made came with the wico replacement stick from the factory which makes the original Bat style even more uncommon and desirable to some. None of these things are a real issue for home use. As a collector I would not have a Berzerk any other way than with the original stick as I remember it in the arcade. I think quite a few others feel the same way.

Well, you've convinced me. Thanks for explaining it better. Berzerk is a grail of mine. I will eventually have one in my home. If it doesn't have the original bat, I will also eventually seek one out for the very purpose of having it as original as possible.

Every Berzerk I ever played BITD had the red Wico stick. The one I have now has the red Wico and that is all I have even known. I would like an original just to have one, but at the prices they are going for and considering my cabinet is not in pristine condition I'll wait for a newer, more reliable reproduction. Good luck with your sale. That is an awesome combination for a nice original machine.
