I have a question. Can you confirm if it has a 4-way or 8-way joystick? Just try moving diagonal during game play. I know the CPO indicates 4-way, but I have pretty strong evidence that it's actually enabled for 8-way. I'd like to get another HUO machine confirmation either way.

You said email you questions, but you didn't list your email address or enable email messages in your profile.

Thanks,

I can't wait for all the passive aggressive "good luck!"s

However, it's a fine looking machine.

Thanks,

Mine was 4-way. I'm pretty certian it was all original, but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks,

I know the joystick has been a debateable issue for quite a while. I've had 3 loose joystcks that were positively from journey machines, talked to 4 people that have cocktails, looked at two upright originals(one being mine) and spoke with a guy in missouri that has two uprights and every one of these are 4 way sticks. You may be able to force the stick to perform 8 way but from what i can tell, these were nothing but a simple 4 way ms pac style joystick. The manual shows a 4 way and so does the cpo. Look at the manuals for many of the midway games and you'll see that the part numbers for the joystick assemblies were all different yet they were still all 4 way.

I am not doubting you, but I am almost positive my joystick is original and is an 8-way. Chris' (zfcamaro) known HUO Journey is also an 8-way. See response #16 in this thread:
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=74683&highlight=journey

When I played the game for the first time at CAX many years ago, it was an 8-way. I don't know who owned that machine, but that particular year, it was voted best game of the show. That should identify the year (I think it was 2001) and perhaps someone here owns/owned it or knows who does.

The code clearly supports 8-way (enough so that I don't think it's a case of "forcing it on the game"). The manual doesn't specify either way (from what I can tell). I must have missed it, where in the manual do you see that it specifies 4-way? But you are correct, the CPO clearly indicates 4-way.

It could be that Bally/Midway happened to use whatever was on hand at the time. As crazy at that sounds, I think that argument holds a lot more plausibility than people give credit for. How many cabinets have we seen pictures where the bottom was from another cab and other weird manufacturer Frankenstein's.

I was just hoping to get another feedback (either way) on what is being advertised as another HUO machine.

i aslo have a Journey cocktail. i have not found how to put it in FREE PLAY either. does anyone know?

I just sold my Journey cocktail this last weekend. Now, sure dudes is HUO, but it looks a bit beat. The one I had was super nice, sold it for $1000, and just got my money back.

And yes UC, the joy in it was 8-way. I thought you had this squared away in your mind already, but I realize youre old and all, maybe you slept it off, ha.

btw, there is no free play option on MCRs of this era. Thats why dudes listing is funny to me. Like ZF said, its a factory option with that button, there is not dip setting for free play.

There is no stock free play mode on Journey. Just a couple years ago though, someone hacked a ROM to enable free play. I use it on my machine and it works fine. I can send the ROM image if anyone needs it. It's just a single EPROM that needs to be burned I believe.

I don't recall right off who did the hack, I'd have to check my old emails. If that person speaks up and would rather me not distribute the ROM image, I will honor that request. At the time though, if I recall, they didn't seem to mind, they weren't selling it or anything like that. He also made a free play ROM hack for Wacko (and a few other Bally/Midway MCR games of that era).

It looks a bit beat? I did see what lookes like mylar separation on the CPO, but that's about it. It looks pretty nice to me.

Yes, I have the 4/8-way joystick thing squared away in my mind, but with another example of a HUO, why not get another verification? And apparently it's not totally cleared up with everyone as the person that responded with several examples of original joysticks that are 4-way. I'm still thinking it's a case of whatever they had on hand at the moment, some went out with 4-way, some 8-way.

BELIEVE IT (or not!) there was a period of time that lasted at least one year, possibly two, where manufacturers were not allowed BY LAW to release games that had a selectable "free play" mode. I would assume that Journey was released during that time. I was told this by a woman (who passed away several years ago) who was on the board of the AMOA and owned and operated machines in our area for many years...

The joystick debate now has it's own thread in the general discussion section, sorry for clogging your for sale post
LOL!!!
I thought that we settled this a year ago Joe?! LOL! Joe, you need to come down here sometime - Id like a rematch (I have an 8 way stick in mine) - im getting some practice time in!! :)
Jeff - NICE Journey - I hope you do get that out of it - Id say its HUO - or damn near.
As far as the Freeplay - I had a freeplay chip for mine burned up by a fellow Klover here that does other MCR chips.
Im not sure if its listed on his site, but it works perfectly!
Im sure hell speak up if he sees this thread.

my space invaders has the red button on the frt and also theres a sticker somewhere that says space invaders huo or hom or something to that effect.. I was wondering if that was a (originally) made for home use machine.. unfortunately its been routed or real beat in homes lol but i thought that was neat...

Jeff, you must hve been hiding that one from me last time i was out there!! i guess its a good thing, cuz you would have had to clean off all of the drool.. WHen your ready to get rid fo that wacko lmk..

im rambling again.. sorry for posting all this in yoru fs post lol..

free bump!!

there, thats better :D

To answer your question Joe, the manual shows the breakdown of the joystick. It doesn't say anything about an 8 way but the picture is clearly a 4 way What's funny here is that many people have claimed an 8 way but nobody seems to want to post a picture of theirs. It takes all of a few seconds to pop the e- clip on the shaft and post a pic of the restrictor plate.
